Okay sure. To sum up, I ordered the 354.00 smart key from the dealer, in person to prove that I own the car. A 2009 ML320.
They delivered the key to me, but when I tried to use it... the remote worked to unlock and lock the doors... but couldn't do the touch thing where I touch the door handle and it unlocks, and push button to start didn't work.
Dealer wanted 50.00 to marry the car and the key, with 3 hour round trip. So, I found out how to do it... so simple.... took 10 seconds.
Remove start button, put key in and turn twice to position 2. Then back to off.
Hold down LOCK button and hit UNLOCK five times in a row within 10 seconds.
That's it. Hope that helps others.

You take it out.
Then do the lock unlock sequence.
Anyways.......I'm going to try your lock/unlock sequence.......

The "features" they are referring to are/is probably Keyless-Go. The keys look identical in most cases, but a non-Keyless-Go key will start the car using the ignition switch, but non of the Keyless-Go features work. A Keyless-Go key has additional components inside the SmartKey to allow it to work. You could get a non-Keyless-Go key for your vehicle, but lose the unlock/lock features by touching the handle, pushbutton start, etc.
A $50 key is a knock-off key probably made in China that would almost certainly not have the Keyless-Go components in it, nor the metal key for manual door unlock or trunk locking. it would look similar to a Mercedes SmartKey but would not have the Mercedes logo or quality of the OEM key. I would recommend to steer away from these keys - you may spend the money and it may not work at all.
In regards to programming it, in some cars it is as simple as inserting the key in the ignition and turning it to position 2. You will get a message on the instrument cluster that it is programming the key. On some cars it takes 10 minutes to complete. Other times, as soon as you get it from the dealer's parts department, all functions work without anything having to be done on your part. They key is matched to your VIN number a the distribution center of the parts department before it is shipped to them, which generally makes the procedure pretty seamless.
