Red Battery Error Message While Driving

This happened to me yesterday while driving on the highway, suddenly a Red battery sign pops up on my dash, then suddenly the temp gauge went all the way to 120C then followed by a message saying "Coolant Low Stop Vehicle Turn off Engine" then suddenly my navi screen shuts off, then everything else in the car started shutting off, luckily for me i was able to pull over on the highway and had to have it towed back home........ Anybody had this issue before? what could possibly the issue? It is a 2010 S550.

if it is just the belt- yes- about $250 for belt and some labor. However if one of your pulleys is frozen it will be a bit more

So it is safe to say this has nothing to do with the alternator or battery correct?

Yes shredded belt is easy fix. Something caused the failure ie frozen or seized pulley/tensioner. You can probably get by with just replacing the failed component but my advice would be to change out both idler pulleys along with the belt tensioner/tightener and of course the belt. These are known failure points on older engines and will (not might) fail in time and leave you stranded, (right now in your case). This is a good DIYer project. The price for all 4 parts is just slightly over $250 from MBdirectparts.com (Old Huskers MB). You can shop around to find less expensive replacements but I would recommend MB Genuine to be the preferred choice for these crucial parts.

Good luck,

Bob
