2008 S550 4Matic - Alternator Failure
today while driving my car completely shut down just before getting on the interstate. Nothing would happen at all, and could not even put the car in neutral.
any one have any suggestions on ways to help keep cost down?

Why do you think it is an alternator failure? You might have a failed battery. Call Mercedes roadside service. They will come out to your vehicle for free and test your batteries (trunk and under hood). If it is a battery, in most cases they will have one with them and sell it to you at the same price as at a dealer and will not charge for labor. Assuming it is the battery, the will be able to then perform a test on the alternator.
You are eligible for free roadside service if your vehicle was purchased directly from an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealership prior to January 4, 2011 and you still own the vehicle.

Thank you! They paid for the tow ($285 for over 30 miles), but it is still in their shop. My concern is the actual cost. The only warning light that came on was a RED battery box under the messages.

Have them check the ECM. Had the same issue and ran through 4 different alternators before they figured out it was ECM not shooting a signal to the voltage regulator
