Q about no compression and balance shaft replacement

I am a newbie and not hands-on. Have 08 S550 that the mechanics said has no compression in cylinder #4. Said I will need a "engine job" that will cost about $3000. Later he called again and said that when he looked at the computer test report and ignition sensor misfire, he thinks that the "balance shaft" might have issues. The cost to fix balance shaft was about $4500 and he did not want to do the engine job, have the cylinders machined and then find out that I need to spend another $4500. Does this make sense? Am I ***ed and will have to junk the car?
thanks
