Failed CV joint/Axle boot
i see that the w216 forum doesnt get much action and being that the platform is identical i feel that the s550 folk should be able to help. my 2010 cl550 4matic with 100k miles started creaking over bumps recently, and ticking after i turn it off(when you shut the car off and the air springs begin to deflate, which im pretty sure is normal but now is accompanied by a ticking sound) i removed the front tire this morning and all looks fine except what i believe is the cv joint or axle boot is torn at the shaft and looks like the grease came out(its not in the middle of the boot but right after where the clamp is that holds the boot to the shaft. my question is could this be the cause of the creaking and ticking sound? is it safe to drive for the time being? i see the part is about $250, but this looks out of my league so how much might this cost to repair?
thanks,
chris

What I did in the past was to source some used (eBay or recycling yard) axles and then buy the boot kits from Mercedes and just do a light rebuild of sorts. You could ask a local shop if they could do the same or just put in some 'experienced' parts without the new boots to get you through the winter. New axle shafts are as you said ~$1k from the online sources.

Part info, see attachment. Note drive shaft (10) left current part # 2213306300, right 2213306400.
