Hey guys I've got an 08 S550 in pristine condition, bit 160k miles. However for some time now it has had a high pitched engine whine. It does it all the time regardless of RPM regardless whether it's sitting or moving regardless what gear it is in, regardless of speed regardless if it's cold warm or hot. Figuring it was a bearing I simply removed the serpentine belt and the noise is still persists. Just to eliminate the possibility I also unplugged the secondary air pump and the noise still persists. Kind of sounds like it's coming from inside the engine towards the front but really hard to pinpoint any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Wondering if I could possibly be crankshaft bearing cam bearings cam chain noise I guess anything's possible. I have come across some threads where people have actually taken their cars to the dealer and then the other just says its normal engine noise but this is definitely not normal. I recently had Mercedes roadside Rescue Me with a dead battery and even the roadside Mercedes guy commented on the wine!
It does change in pitch with rpm. I will post a sound clip asap of the noise. My gut tells me it is internal......as I can't possibly be belt or pulley although I have heard the crankshaft pulley can resonate, but again by removing the belt and removing the load the noise is still there it's very puzzling.
I used one to track down a pesky bearing noise. They have a diaphragm that amplifies the noise so you can hear it better. Just touch the end to the engine parts where you think the noise is coming from. On another car i was able to easily track down a lifter noise.
intersting i just had some work done on the engine trans mounts etc and under hood bearings tensioner new belt idler bearings replaced and drive train couplers mounts/bearings ...and I have a slight whine in the cabin that varies with revs that I do not beleve was there before.....
