Telematics update

Let us assume that I own a 2007 S600, and let us also assume that I have a laptop with DAS and the hardware to attach it to the car (and some clue how to use it). Let's also assume that I want to update the telematics to the latest version... maps would be nice too, but honestly, the M-B nav is half brain dead and the last update was - what - 4 years ago? 5?

Is P/N A2218270065 what I want?
Will there be any part of this process that will require a login, like SCN coding does, or can I do it by myself, off line?
How risky is it to do this -- is there a significant risk of the upgrade screwing up the COMAND system and leaving it worse off than it is now?
Lastly -- anyone here have the CD I can borrow or download? I see a downloadable copy on Fleabay for under $10, seems pretty cheap (albeit of questionable legality, I'm sure).

221 827 06 65-26 is the most recent telematics disc for the NTG3 USA unit. If you are proficient with manipulating your DAS installation to perform offline coding, you can carry it out and it is all automatic. The telematics disc (commonly referred to as a DVD, but is actually less than 500MB and is actually a CD-ROM) contains firmware update for all of the devices on the MOST ring, including the main application running the COMAND, DVD-ROM drive firmware, SiriusXM tuner (which may afford you additional channels due to the merger several years ago) SDS module (speech recognition system), and TUNER/SOUND module (as it sounds, the actual radio tuner, and amplifier firmware that may had some changes in the DSP curves, etc).

DIsc is about $20 from the dealer.

As far as bricking the COMAND, there is a chance that could happen, yes. Is it likely? No. It takes about 45 minutes to carry out if all modules on the MOST ring need an update. You can do it while driving, or connected to a 40+ amp charger.

If it fails while updating, it will fall back into Bootloader mode and continue where it left of in most cases, just as a Navigation Map disc does.

If the idea has crossed your mind about updating the Navigation Maps from a "never used backup" copy of the DVD, be warned that with the age of the optics and the questionable quality of the media you will get, the chances are greater than not that it will likely fail transferring a few GB of data to the internal HDD. Not to say it isn't doable, but be aware. If it fails, it falls back to the previous map, and no harm is done.

We’re you able to get this carried out?

Late to the party and if you remember earlier posts sounds like we have identical cars/problems.

The telematics was shall I say, a little sketchy with my setup. It's been a few years but I remember it took me several tries for it to "take off" and upgrade so to speak. And yeah, it was right around 45 minutes.

We’re on a little (ha!) road trip at the moment, so I’ll pick back up when we return. About 1350 miles in so far. Car has been superb, although it did throw one DTC for “insufficient boost” and something to do with a secondary air pump. I just cleared the codes; if they reoccur I’ll troubleshoot after I get home.

This is one of the most frequently asked questions on W221 boards - particularly for the NTG3 systems. I will try to get a video up of carrying it out and what to expect during the process in the next couple of days.
