Crank but no start? Here's my story...
A few Sundays ago I got into my 2007 S550 with over 200,000 miles and it started right up. I drove about two blocks before the car stalled and subsequent attempts to start it failed. The car would crank and not start. I got one of those fuel pressure gauges to check fuel pressure at the fuel injector rail and there was none. This car is 12 years old with many miles and has pumped a lot of fuel and so it made sense to pull the fuel pump which was no longer working. Pulling the old fuel pump and dropping in a new fuel pump and gasket takes about 15-20 minutes if you have less than a half tank of gas, if you have more than a half a tank you will need to siphon off some gas. With the fuel pump replaced the car started right up.
Sorry I don't have pictures for you folks. If you have recently acquired an S550 that's over 10 years old and don't have a complete service history this may be something you will want to do as preventative maintenance otherwise you could get stranded somewhere.
Things to note:
If you continue to crank your car eventually you will cause your battery to drain which will give the impression that there are other problems with the car. Invest in a CTEK charger and make sure your battery is sufficiently charged as you are trouble shooting.
