S350 2011: A/C buttons go dark, no error in media display

S350 2011: A/C buttons go dark, no error in media display
I started my car this afternoon; A/C by default on AUTO; switched on recirc, temp on 27 **°C.
Two minutes later, all A/C buttons go dark, A/C shows 25 °C, blows cool; no error on media display.
I drove to the kerb, switched of the car, hoping something would reset and fix itself. Did not happen.
Kept driving to the petrol station. Switched off car; switched back on after 5 minutes, A/C buttons work again.
Any ideas how to figure out what is wrong here?
