What if any issues are there with this turbo engine?
BMW turbos have are notorious for problems
How are the mercedes turbos?
Pretty reliable?

There is no comparison. The Mercedes is a better all-around car in way of quality and reliability. I have yet to see any complaints on the w221 forum about the bi-turbo motor. Surf the w222 forum. Those owners may have a different opinion than I do.
