Updating Command system for a 2007 S550
1) The music file system is totally wonky. It puts folders inside others that are not that way on the SD card according to Windows (I use a PCMCIA to SD adapter). This is especially true on High capacity cards (above 8GB). It may be just a 'high number of items on the card' thing. It makes finding a particular album or artist very frustrating. I'm wondering if a software update will fix the card capacity issue. Or if there is hardware updates that are needed?
2) Any way to get the PCMCIA slot updated to the 2010-13 SD slot? Not a big deal if I can solve the above problem with a software update, but I thought I would check with you guys.
3) Any after market head units that can actually be recommended without losing functionality for the main systems? I only have Package P1, so no major upgraded seat controls (if that makes a difference).
Another thing, the command wheel is starting to get just a touch bit "sticky" for lack of a better term. I'm starting to encounter a bit of stiffness in the "clicks" when scrolling. Feels like the magnets are not "knowing" exactly where they are. Is this impending imminent failure? If this is a known problem, any solution? If it won't fail altogether, the stiffness is not a problem. Just want to know if this *will* lead to failure.
Thanks!
folder structure is old school, but then MP3 quality even at 256 kb isn't fit to play anyway
it would appear from Polar Bear's clock fix post you could try and update the comand at home (install later mapping beforehand - not sure why but its what the dealers ask before any updating process is undertaken). If you buy the last update disc remember it needs a powerful supply (maybe engine running if DIY at home) as the car uses 37 amps with the key on so the battery will die and crash out during the updating process (without support to keep volts up)
you may end up with AC turned off and need diagnostics kit to re-enable, Merc dealers do this when they update so not sure when using an update disc at home if it would disable AC as well…
you can't get the later set up of the newer unit (NTG 3.0 from 2005/9 and NTG 3.5 from 2009/12 is totally different, with far worse reliability on the later model (DTF !!!)
there's a post about a wide screen android system below
WHATS WITH THE STUPID RED BOX POPPING UP AND GETTING IN THE WAY AS YOU TYPE it not supposed to be some **** site !!!

I was outside when I did mine, engine running (to keep volts up) took about 3 seconds to get in engineering mode and 10 mins to update
as soon as it rebooted and I could navigate menus, the time and date where 100% spot on, I ticked the daylight saving option (I had to have off for more than a year) and the analogue clock span round to match.
it is all working including Nav and traffic

There is a very extensive thread covering the android head unit. Yes it works well and maintains all stock functions.
The comand knob needs to be taken apart, cleaned and lubed up. Nothing crazy if you’re used to dealing with electronics. It has a small motor that stops it from spinning at certain points and a bunch of gearing. The gearing gets gunked up and it’s starts feeling mushy.
