Smile 3 codes 1170, 0442, 0335 on my 2007 S600 with 66k miles

So I have been getting intermittent codes 0442, 1170 for months. Always set the codes and the yellow engine light at right about 3/4 of a fuel tank. Cleared the codes and they would come right back. This past week it added a 0335 to the code list of DTC. I was worried about that Crankshaft Position Sensor. Did not want to get stranded. Called my Dealer, made an appointment for a wallet-ectomy. Also called my Idie and he said change the gas cap. I said this was $140K car in 2007 and nothing is so simple when it has tons of computers. He laughed and said trust me. Called the Dealer. They wanted $40 for a gas cap. Checked Ebay and found a Mercedes gas cap in the original parts bag for $16. Ordered it expecting to send it back because this will never work......

Swapped the new gas cap. The yellow lights went out on startup and no codes reported on the scanner. Could it really be that simple?

Yep. It could.

I chased a coolant problem for weeks before figuring out my brand new coolant reservoir cap was no good.

Yes, I read about it when you were going through it. You had to carry a gallon of coolant mix to keep topping off a "non-existent" leak.

So far I am good. No lights. It runs better. Idles smoother. Whodathunkit? I still have my appointment at the Dealer set up. I am betting if I cancel, the code will throw again.......If I don't cancel, they will charge me $500 to tell me it looks good......

I am going to call the Indie who said it was simply a gas cap and buy him a steak dinner and ask him if he thinks I should cancel the Dealer or let them diagnose it.

I'm too lazy to look them up. What do those codes indicate?
