Fan problem or not?

Hi All,

I'm new to the S-Class forum as I just last week bought a 2013 S550. Bought it from a dealer and unfortunately found some issues after drove it home.

One thing is that when I scan the car with my iCarsoft MB II it gives me P048000 "Electric fan 1 has an electrical fault or open circuit." "DTC Status: Stored."

The fan in the front of the car seems to be working fine so I tried to erase the error code but it won't go away.

Do I really have a fan problem or is this just a code only someone with star system can erase?

If you can't erase it means the problem is still there

Have dealer do a quick test using Xentry (MB diagnostics) if not purchased locally, cover local dealer diagnostics & repair.

Just wondering why the fan works but the error code says open circuit. Usually open circuit in electrical motor means the motor is dead.

This error code comes up when I scan the Engine Control Module. Is there some other fan somewhere else it could point at? I would not think the ECM has it's own fans inside...?

I'm not positive, but I believe there are two fans that operate independently.
It may be possible that one fan is working and the other is not.

I only have one big fan in front. It covers the whole front of the car radiator area. No other fans.

My fan works and it changes speed depending on cooling demand. It definitely runs different speeds and not just ON/OF with fast speed.

I'm not worried about the error code as long as the fan works.

Why?

My fan runs as it should with varying speeds...

I assume this all is about the big fan in front of the car. If there is another fan somewhere then I would be worried too...

If that big fan fails ... there is nothing to keep you or the engine cool, so it's a stranding event potentially. Stored codes are there to show you something was wrong at some point, so it could be bad, going bad or replaced and someone did not clear the stored event. For me it's not worth being stranded to find out.
