The MMU
Owners of larger Mercedes should probably get their own unit of measure for cost. The MMU (Mercedes Monetary Unit) would be one obvious choice. I suppose the only question is whether $1K is sufficient valuation.
This weekend I'll be throwing about half an MMU worth of parts at mine...

I also like the MMU, as derived from the AMU…
I waded into the aviation world representing some Twin Commander owners surprised to find their “bargain” twin prop needed a 150 AMU wing spar replacement. That, and two rich guys litigating over the cost of a Citation (personal jet) windscreen replacement...
As a former Ferrari owner, I know too well the FMU (use whatever acronym you want for that one!). 2 FMU’s for sparkplug wires… just the wires, not the coils. I bought my Ferrari, with only 15K miles from a guy who had spent 30 FMU in the last 500 miles. I can’t imagine why he wanted to sell such a low mileage car???
On the price of MB parts, I haven't had much sticker shock, other than 1 MMU for a V-12 coil pack and 0.5 MMU for ABC hose. On other stuff, there’s aftermarket and used. Which brings up the $1K unit for the MMU.... My recent posts had only 0.007 MMU for a washer pump and 0.008 MMU for a wheel sensor. That may get confusing for the math challenged and, at a minimum, require a calculator for most of us...
I also like the last three numbers on the trunk as the cost of a trip to the shop... Although adjusted for inflation, requires quadrupling… 550 has become 2200….
Also, really appreciate you guys that share repair info here. I try to do my part but haven't needed much help, thankfully, and don’t follow the forum except occasionally.
Here’s a suggestion...
In my Ferrari ownership years, we requested and the moderator put together a “Sticky" for cross-referencing part #'s. For example, I was the first to confirm that a $15 VW thermostat worked even better than the $250 Ferrari V-12 thermostat! (But, that was only 0.25 FMU’s... a pittance.) Point is, none of my cars have seen a repair shop for at least 15 years. Exotic car ownership doesn't have to be expensive. (Did I just call the S-class an “Exotic"? Well maybe the S65...)
Does anyone else think a part cross-reference is useful? Moderator?
Regards… Mark
