my understanding is to fit the later headlamps you have to fit a CGW from a later car code the lights online, then put the old gateway back in

doesn't mean I'm right.... but there is a relationship between getting them to behave and the use of the later CGW

ah u r in the UK, there's a place in light water surrey that know exactly what to do.... they have done it lots. In the early days lots of Business drivers chauffeuring wanted to look like they had the latest cars.

They are very straight, but very helpful and knowledgeable. With all the Online dealer tools and a facelift CGW :-) But not cheap checkout comandonline

I guess my question would be, did someone install post-2010 Mercedes-Benz headlights and code around the differences somehow, OR are they actually the aftermarket lights that are supposed to be direct plug-in replacements? You can find those on Fleabay etc. Plug-in replacement LED tail lights can be had also.

When modifications have been made to a car, especially a car like one of these, you will get wildly differing opinions from various sources. Your mechanic may or may not know anything at all about what's going on. Best to figure out exactly what was done to facelift the car, and go from there. SOMEONE had to have done the facelift modification work... I'd try to find out who that was and what exactly was done.

of course there's an element of manual adjustment, anyone can see that when you open the bonnet.... doesn't mean you should fiddle with it.....

so the guy trashed the perfect headlamp alignment, because too stupid to just inform the car how they work.... not a good move.
by law with xenon lamps in Europe, the nod feature the headlamps complete as they come on and go through the range of movement is mandatory for a real MOT (sure most don't bother but that's not the point)

what happens when they wake up and point down you'll not see where you are going... and what about corner lighting, not just move with the wheel, which works well on these barges, but the additional lighting that comes on some higher spec ones.... and how about if the car talks to the lights to determine how when and what to do.... what's to say they will forget to switch off one day when you get out leaving you with a flat battery and or what if they turn off mid corner on a dark lane... NICE move... why would you ever want to do it right... FYI the penalty for causing death by dangerous driving is 10 years in the UK AND you'll have no insurance

Glad you got them aimed in a more acceptable direction, but unless they are back to doing everything they did originally I wouldn't exactly call them "fixed". If you're lucky, they will stay broken the same way permanently.
