Default to S not E
On the W220 the switch was C & S but it was a static mechanical switch that kept its setting after shut down
Is there a way to program the W221 in C4 Xentry to make it stay/start in S except when you manually want E ?

mine w221 stays where the user selects and only changes if told too
on a w211 my fathers also stays where you said.... it drives so much better in you leave it in C
it has a switch C to S and can manually fight the gear stick nudging left to argue with it.... sometimes my knee has done it in error
