Question So is this a REAL ISSUE?

So there is a TSB about chain rattle on start up but does that lead to catastrophic engine failure/damage?
Is it worth spending 3k as shown or just ignore the rattle since there is no CEL or other malfunctions.
Need to know is it is a real or hyped issue !

The rattle will stretch the chain and it might jump a tooth or brake. So its a real issue.

However...if you are handy you can do this yourself. I did it on my M278 engine and it wasnt too bad. Order the kit from FCPEuro and go at it.

Good luck.

By the way...if the Solenoids are not leaking oil into the cable then there is no need to replace them....while at it check the cables at the cam sensors as well....they like to leak....replace them if they do before the oil makes it to the ECU.

I did not... i just followed the wis document...take the plumbing out of the way...take the front covers off and the tensioners are exposed....drivers side is a little harder since you have to remove the oil filter housing. Make sure you have all new gaskets and the correct liquid gasket for the front covers.

My expert indie Benz mechanic says this when I requested the repair:

"With this problem the only real way to know if your vehicle is equipped with the check valves and updated parts is to disassembly and visually inspect, this is the same labor operation as actually installing the check valves and tensioners. The bulletin for the noise (that is consistent with the noise you hear) explicitly states "The secondary chain tensioners produce a rattling noise until the engine oil pressure has built up. No consequential damage is to be expected." for this reason most extended warranty companies do not pay for this parts upgrade as they do not see this as a failed component. We also have many customers who have chosen NOT to perform the upgrade, out of pocket, for this reason. The concern is that we disassemble, find you already have the upgraded components. It is very hard (maybe impossible) sometimes to pin-point these types of noises, visually speaking the components involved look good, and the tolerances that are internal to components, like on something like a camshaft gear, are not measurable. The noise from the engine is not normal, although it is relatively common. We have yet to see it result in further damage"
