W221 Music Randomly Shutting Off (SOLVED)
The problem I've had in my car, as the title suggests is my music would randomly shut off, regardless of whether I'm listening to AUX or disc. Usually it only shuts off once or twice, but occasionally would keep doing it non stop forcing me to turn off my screen or turn the audio off. Even with the screen off I would hear the amp turning on or off. And sometimes after turning the screen off I wouldn't be able to turn it back on until everything is back to normal. I also had 2 codes for both of my radio antennas having an open circuit, resulting in my radio not woking, but no other codes were present. The problem came and went, and sometimes would not come back for weeks.
The problem, at least in my case, was dust build up inside the amplifier. Before you dish out $$ for either a new amp and/or diagnostic costs, take a look at your amplifier. It is located behind the left side cover of your trunk (take a look at some youtube videos if you're unsure) and is held by a few bolts and connections. There is a little fan on top of the amplifier, which in my case, attracted dust creating a heavy build up, which resulted in short circuits all over the board. Aside from some torx and sockets you will also need a small brush and electrical cleaner. Brush off all the dust with the dry brush, and after, finish the cleaning process by spraying the electrical component cleaner on the brush and thoroughly cleaning out the circuit board. Let the cleaner evaporate before installing everything back together.
Another little thing you could do, at least I did it, was reapply some thermal paste to the heat sink (you must take it off in order to do so), as overheating can fry the unit as well. Just make sure you take it off and put it back on very carefully not to break anything inside.
Refer to the google image of the w221 amplifier below.
Not exactly the hardest problem to solve, but hopefully this helps someone out in the future.
