My s550 just stopped moving

I have a 2008 s550 4 matic. Had no issues driving it and then the other day leaving my sons hockey game the car stopped accelerating. If I stepped on gas it would rev but not move. If I put in reverse it would move but if I pressed gas it wouldn’t accelerate. Took it to the dealership and they said it was the transmission. They want 7000 to get one and put it in. Question? I don’t a dealer would try to get one over on someone but do you think it’s really the transmission or could it be something else. Should I take to a tranny shop to fix instead of dealership.

Any other place will be cheaper then the dealer. I couldn't tell you over the internet if it actually is the transmission or not but if it does need a transmission I would buy a used one and have a shop swap it. That would be cheaper then 7K.

a second hand unit would not be a good idea - Mercedes auto-boxes are not well made and do not last long, very few manufacturers attempt to make their own, they buy them in from people that know what they are doing for a reason

the Merc 4x4 7g box is a particularly special unit that was made with a bearing that fell to bits, (I believe it wasn't a serviceable part so it needed a complete box replacement to resolve) and it was so unreliable on the early cars it used to be all over forums, until a class action lawsuit for USA got you a free new box. But finding these post seems hard to come by these days.

The cost of fitting a box and finding its scrap is going to cost so much money may well make more sense to see if a good merc auto specialist can rebuilt it... but even this is going to be pricey. TC are now failing at an alarming rate $1500, the electro place is going to be $800 fitted, fluid and filter $100 then the clutches, bearing O rings and gaskets will be $xxx then stick on 8 hours at $yyy and if high miles, then the ISM to change gears on the outside would bring peace of mind for yet another $1000

yes pay $1800 for a bit of scrap to be fitted if it makes your day but don't bother coming back and crying....

What if it is just that ISM that failed. Without it working gear box does not work correctly.

In case of ISM it is easy for anybody to say it is tranny issue, like it would be, but the fix would not need tranny swap.

If the tranny goes wouldn’t it give some sign of coming trouble first? ISM is electrical servo that can fail in a moment without any prior symptom.
