Front airmatic struts failed, is it better to replace rear struts also?
2011 W221 front struts failed without any prior warning while on a drive. A message like "car too low" was displayed while driving. I stopped the car and found that the driver side strut has totally failed. Within a minute or two I heard a pop sound from the passenger side and that strut also failed fully. The car has done 40K miles (not a daily driver). Should I change the rear struts also as a preventive measure? I am thinking those rear struts must also be on their way out so I might as well get them replaced as well. There were absolutely no prior symptoms or warnings about the impending damage - they just failed out of the blue.

Do just the fronts..... We rarely see the rear ones fail. Eventually they will fail but no need to replace if they are not leaking.

The bags in the rear are just as old and crusty as the fronts. One shop visit vs two. At least you have options.
