whooshing sound of air releasing after turning off ignition

After turning off the car and exiting the vehicle, there is a whoosh of air releasing under the hood. At first it's a quick one second release, followed by a couple seconds of decreasing air release. What is this and is it normal? Is it just the air suspension system de-pressuring? (hoping)

Yup. It's self-leveling. Normal Airmatic (AirTragic, if you're BOTUS, Lol) operation.

like the comment above : but I'm not convinced - when mine does it you get a water turning to steam type noise to boot - and I only get it now and again - I still think its the AC condense draining out on to the right side CAT

The car has a set level that changes with driving speed, i.e. the car will run lower with fast speeds for better handling but, the car will be pulled down with any speed. This is the down force that the moving car produces.

Airmatic adds air in the springs to keep the car at the set level so when you stop the car it raises up because the down force disappears.

When driving and making stops at traffic does not initiate the release of air as the car “thinks” it will be moving soon again so the car stays up but when you park the car and turn engine off and exit the car it knows driving is done and let’s air out to bring the car down to the set height.

You can experiment with this too. If you have a fast drive and then stop and exit the car from driving fast you will have bigger air release than if you drive slow long enough after fast drive. This difference is from the amount of down force the springs had to work against.

Air release is perfectly normal. There would be a problem if it would not happen.

Yep, I know how the suspension system works - my car hasn't made this noise for a long time (its been cold) - in the summer after a long drive it does it now and then. Its volume increases five fold when the CAT temps have been very high - which makes me thinks its condense - it also exceptionally rare to hear unless I'm reversing and parking on an angle on my drive where I suspect the angle of the air con drain gets it to land on a different far hotter area of the CAT

there a simple test

start your car drive 10 yards turn it off, and lock it - does it still make a noise ? (my idea can't happen in such a short time frame) - but your's should be repeatable 100% of the time
if it does it would have to be a different - local market addition - USA get extras for pretend environmental control - so it might be a fuel system feature European cars don't get

Air from suspension release when ignition off is normal but when it release it make a big noise then it's not normal.

problem due to air hose connection to the air pump is broken, correct it then you will see a different

Minh, what part of the car is that picture from? Does the car need to be on a lift to see it?

This is a air pump located in front right fender, either you lift up the car and remove the bottom cover of you can remove a right wheel then remove fender cover then air pump is accessible.

I believe there should be a filter there.

Yes, I replaced the compressor filter a few months ago (beginning of November 2021). It is a small one. The one I replaced with was made by Mann WK 32/6. There is also a Hengst H452WK compressor filter. The same thing - different brand name.

I hope it helps.

Passenger front. Might have to remove wheel liner. I replaced my filter with a Mann when upgraded bumpers so it was easy once the bumper was off.

Yes, that is what I did too. I removed the front passenger side plastic wheel liner only. There was no need to remove the whole front bumper. It was really a very easy job. And it was needed. The filter was full of little rocks (yes!), sand and dust. It was long overdue.
The compressor can easily "breathe" now.
I hope that helps.
