W221 resale value?

I bought a 2013 S550 4Matic a few years ago. With other cars in the stable, the Benz has mostly been a garage queen. Finally deciding to sell it, thinking that the used car market is hot, but I'm not getting the interest I thought that I would. I'm curious what this group thinks.

My variant has Splitview, Night View Assist PLUS with Pedestrian Detection, heated steering wheel, B&O audio, Rear Entertainment Package (headrest displays, headphones, remote, DVD player), Pano roof, Rear seat package (reclining, ventilated, memory seats), Driver Assistance Package (adaptive cruise, blind spot warning, lane keep), 4-Zone AC, Sport Package (AMG bodywork, wheels), soft closing doors, power side shades, and more. With new headlights, service records, wearable parts all replaced, interior parts/panels (all replaced under warranty), new tires, no wear on leather, and 63K miles, I thought it would have sold quickly. It was priced it at $35K a few months ago and now down to $30K. Although there were a few interests, it's still in my garage and I have another car coming so I need to make room.

What are you seeing in the marketplace? I know if it's cheap enough, someone will buy it. At the same time, this car is unique with all of its features and low mileage, I thought it would be more desirable. It's what got me to buy it! Is it that people are wanting cars with better gas mileage or EVs? I'd like to get your input. Thanks.

w222 can be had in a 35-40k range at this point.
I dont think you will get 35 or 30.

20-25 is probably a more realistic range and thats if you find the right buyer you wants that specific car.

Its weird I know since used Tahoes and Escalades are going for crazy money.

If it's clean, put it on Bring a Trailer. Clean low mileage W221's sell for stupid money there.

Where are you posting your car? I sold my 2012 S550, relatively basic aside from AMG styling recently for $22k. Had 81k miles on the ticker when I did. Posted on a variety of websites and ended up selling it through AutoTrader. Do you have a link to your listing?

Wow, that's disappointing. The S550 offers so much content for the cost of a Civic (no idea what they cost these days). For me, the W221 body is more attractive than W222.

Thank you, I'll look into it.

I first listed on AutoTrader, then on OfferUp, then Craigslist.

Below is the AutoTrader link. I have more pictures and video that really show off the car, but it's limited to 24 pictures.

You did well on the advertisement itself. Only suggestion I’d have is list it with a round number. People looking for cars from private parties see “$29,998” and they will scroll past as that’s typically how dealers list their vehicles. Whenever I’m looking for cars (which is almost exclusively through private parties) I may not have even looked at your ad and just assumed it was a dealer. Food for thought.

Is your exterior Blue or Black? It looks black on the pics but the listing says blue?

It's "Lunar Blue". Since I know the car color, I didn't realize that it may look black to others.

If BAT won't list it, then look to Carsandbids.com If it is super clean with no issues BAT should take it. Go no reserve and you'll make more than risking it not selling. Both BAT and carsandbids.com bring out the bidders.

Appreciate the advice. The car is very clean. I submitted it for listing with BAT based on suggestion by @MowgliCSM so I'm waiting to hear back. I did specify a reserve. Based on what you wrote, I guess it's kind of like some eBay auctions where no reserve items garner more interest and attention?

No no not like eBay. eBay's been on the vehicle auction market share decline because of their fixed ending auction. Most other sites like BAT, C&B, Big Iron add 2 minutes after each bid with less than 2 minutes to go. eBay is dumb that they can let people come in at the very last second and do a bid snipe. I suggest no reserve for BAT just because it will garner more traffic and interest. Cars sold on BAT generally do very well. More often than not you see well sold, not necessarily well bought. Do a search on BAT for W221 and a chart will come up with every single W221 listed and what the bid was. Most sell for very strong numbers, very rarely do you see one that was like wow it went on the cheap. No reserve cars generally do better than reserve cars if you study it. The data is all there.

Thank you. I did look at W221 BAT results, but did not pay attention to those that had a reserve versus not. My concern was that the car was going to be sold below my acceptable pricing. Is my only recourse to hope for the best and hope that "past performance will be representative of result"? Also, with BAT's general policy to not relist cars, I presume I have just one shot in getting it sold? I realize that I can read more on BAT's site, but if you have any more insights to share, I'd appreciate it.

Yes you only get 1 bite at the apple if it doesn't meet reserve. Only time you see repeats is if the buyer doesn't follow through. Also see repeats from one owner to the next, like 1 year later. If you notice on BAT a lot of the sellers are dealers. They find deals then flip on BAT. If you get accepted consider it an honor because your vehicle is cool and take full advantage of it.

Man, If I hadn't bought my 2013 two years ago I would buy yours for the $30k. I paid just below $22k for mine with 75000 miles on the clock but I do not have nearly the options you have. Your car is loaded!

I do have what I mostly need as I have the driver assist package. I also have rear door sun shades that I really don't need but the night view you have would be nice addition.

In my opinion you certainly are not asking too much for it, just need to find the person who is looking for a car like this.

Perhaps I should have made the car look as clean and perfect as possible. I wonder what metric they used to make the decision. Perhaps I will give carsandbids a try.

BAT is a bunch of snobs living in their own little bubble. Good for some sellers but the prices are just hilarious if you are a buyer. I wanted to list my very clean w126 and they didnt take me.

I emailed BAT asking for the basis of their decision. I was told that they are inundated with listing requests, which I believe, and that they focus on vehicles with lower mileage. Mine has 63K.

The frequent use of the word "rare" in the listing is a red flag for some.

Other potential red flags in the listing: unicorn, pampered, "no other".

Tone the salesmanship down a bit. It's an old out of warranty Mercedes with a reputation for complexity and expensive repairs. And it guzzles gas.

But it looks nice and is comfortable.

And car sales are softening now. The peak is behind us.

Seems to have nice options compared to mine which I paid $27k two years ago with 68k miles from a dealership. Have you thought of putting it on You Tube like
Autohaus of Naples does. It will then get found by people looking for one. I agree with you, I like the 2013 appearance opposed to newer ones. I'd say You Tube and don't put a price which is what they do and just feel callers, that way you could go up or down on price. You have a fine car but I did notice its a 3rd owner which may be one problem selling it. Most prefer the 1 owner cars.

Thanks for your insights. Funny, those words are how I describe the car with friends, SO, and associates. I was looking for a S550 4Matic with Splitview, Nightview, B&O, etc. When I found it, everyone told me how rara it was. I love this car! At the same time, I do see what you mean--lots of people probably describe their cars that way and it loses the meaning and can even cause skepticism. I will heed your suggestion and tone it down the next time I edit the ad. I just wish more would come and see the car. It's hard to demonstrate how this car has been taken care of and truly problem free through an ad (at this time, of course). Again, thank you.

Thank you for your input. I will give YT a look. I guess I have seen cars on YT but never considered to use it as advertisement. I appreciate your comments. I guess I'll need to adjust the pricing too, given the market conditions.
