cup holder

New owner of a 2008 S550 and love the car. Driving home from purchase 3 weeks ago, I noticed the cover over the cup holder wouldn't close. I didn't want to force it so I just left if. Fiddling wit it later, it still won't close so I took the insert piece out. It took some wiggling back and forth but finally came out. I didn't feel anything snap or break so I don't think I broke it. Apparently, (read the book afterwards) I was supposed to pull up on the shiny metal things (see arrows on pic). Now that it's out, I can see pulling up on the shiny metal causes plastic parts on both sides of the "feet" to retract a bit.(arrows)
There is also a lever (circled) on top that moves back and forth but doesn't do anything. Underneath, it appears to have a spring like suspension of sorts. Some white grease is visible where it looks like the feet would go up into the unit. It would seem like pushing down on top of the whole unit would compress it down, but there is only a tiny bit of movement and something is restricting it.

See pics for circles, arrows, etc.

Backing up a bit. What exactly is the cupholder supposed to do? Should it pop up when the lid is opened? Is the lever a sensor or latch that allows it to pop up? Is this "latch" broken inside or what?

Any suggestions?

I read the same thing in my book. It doesn't answer my questions. Why would the lid not close? What is is supposed to do?

Does not pop up should sit flush so door can close properly OM explained this by not emphasizing pop up. Anyway, you may need to repair/replace cup holder.

Perhaps "pop up" is not the right terminology. Does the cup holder rise up when the lid is open. I've been experimenting with it sitting here at my desk, gently moving the lever back and forth while pressing on top of the holder. It then, with minimum pressure it started to move up and down easily. This leads me to think that closing the lid pushes the lever which then allows the cup holder to be pushed down by the lids.

While it was making it go up and down, I picked up my phone to take a picture in the up and down position with about a 1/2" of movement. Of course, the minute Ii had the phone in my hand to take a pic, it locked up again and I can't make it go down.

Yes. The cup holder module does slowly rise about 1.5cm when you open the lid and lowers when you close it.

I've had to replace the part number 180 above as one hinge had broken and it was sorta lopsided.

Know that the cover that matches your interior simply pops off, so no need to order that. Just pop it off of the broken box and attach it to the replacement.

Yeah. I debate back and forth about getting a phone holder. I really like the clean look of the interior (especially compared to modern MBs that look like aircraft cockpits). I've even considered taking the cup holders out and placing my phone in the box...but then I do use the cup holders quite often. At least 1/3 of the time when I'm in the car, for coffee.

That being said, coming from a Panamera (with a million buttons), everything is more spartan 😂

I usually go with a Proclip base and an automatic grabbing wireless charge base. Proclip doesn't make a base in my interior color so it would stand out like crazy. The cup holder base I picked up can be compact to hide it or extended to place it in front of an A/C vent for hot days.

Proclip makes really nice stuff. I had a setup from them in my Panamera. The base was a clever mount in the opening of the front seats (behind the headrest). To that base I mounted an iPhone holder so the kid could watch movies on longer rides. I used an old phone that we had laying around and took the sim card out and it was effectively an iPod Touch filled with movies and shows.

Here are some pics from the internet:
The base:

And to that base I added the appropriate holder for my iPhone SE and the result was something like this (but an iPhone instead of a tablet):

I'll have a look and see what they have for the W221!

Each side of the dash and one down low by the passenger's legs. None of the positions are ideal, especially if you have a big phone. The left side dash will block your view of the display. The right side dash will block your passenger's view of the display and expose your wiring mess to passengers since you have to tilt your mount all the way left. The passenger console area will get in the way of your passenger's legs and you will have to look down a lot for reading maps.
