2010 S550 4matic - Front Left Lower Forward Control Arm

Hello everyone, sorry for the confusing title…I’m having some install issues with a front lower forward control arm on my 2010 W221 S550 4matic.

I was able to remove the control arm; however, I’m struggling to insert the ball joint end into the knuckle. The boot and clamp for the CV joint (It is 4matic) seems to block the angle required….does anyone have instructions on an install for the lower forward control arm? Should I break the clip and pull the boot back?

Any insight is appreciated.

Stephen

This forum is outstanding. A related post by robkneeland confirmed that the rack has to be disconnected. Exact same issue. Could get it apart but not back together…..just not clear if he only detached the tie rod or if more has to be done. Thoughts?

Well, unfortunately I confirmed the part was not an exact match. The ball joint installed on the arm by Delphi adds a 1/4 inch in height which means not enough clearance. I checked by installing the old one. I guess lesson learned….

Now I either order the part from Mercedes or just send the car to them….argh

lemforder do most of the arms.... quite a few parts places do this OEM brand at 1/3 of Merc robbery prices in europe

really odd u can get ABC arms but the airmatic ones are not out there... I tried febi bilstein they were rubbish

maybe you can lift the engine carefully to get more clearance ?

Delayed response but I only disconnected the tie rod end. I was REALLY frustrated with being able to remove the old but not install the new. Removed the tie rod end and the sun came out, birds started chirping. All was right.

I did look for a Lemforder control arm but they were not available and FCP also said that they did not have a pn for them. Why I dunno.
