ESP ABS Inoperative - Radar Sensor
I have recently had the yellow ESP ABS inoperative message. Heavy steering. It happened immediately after going over a speed hump.
The car is a CL500 (CL550) W216 2008 model.
I initially thought it would be a wheel speed sensor, but no such codes came up.
Off I went to the local independent expert, who has reported that :
Stored & Current code 6407 No CAN message from component A86/1b4 (Right outer radar sensor, front bumper).
Stored & Current code 9014 The consumer shut-off is activated.
Stored code 5944 Chassis CAN bus : No CAN message is received from the control module N47-5 (ESP Control module).
Stored code 5962 An Internal fault exists in the component A7/3 (Traction system hydraulic unit)
Stored code 5097 CAN bus fault The control module is in a passive status owing to an ESP fault.
The Independent Mechanic believes that the issue is the Right Outer Radar Sensor in the front bumper. This will cause all the warning messages.
He has asked me to seek a second opinion at a Mercedes Benz dealership by having the car fully scoped for diagnosis and get a quote from them.
The quoted price I have received for a right outer radar sensor is $2,384 plus 10% GST in Australian dollars.
I have reservations about replacing parts randomly. I personally thought it was an ESP module issue but I am not a mechanic.
Is there anyone in the Brains trust here that can offer opinions?
Thanks in advance.

codes pretty irrelevant - if you have the tools go to the ABS sensor readings and drive up the road I expect your left rear sensor died - its common - buy after market the OEM ones are very costly and worse quality - they are VERY easy to fit
and yes one sensor misbehaving will bring all sorts of strangeness - second time my left rear died I lost all gears forward and backwards too ! its a 30 min job wheel off wire goes up behind the wheel arch liner to a connector block with a massive square C clip holding the cover on - only need 3 tools torx key, 10mm socket (I think) and the road wheel off

the wires can break and give intermittent connection for up to 6 months - parked up may well say all good - but on the road subtle suspension movement wiggles the wires - drive and check reading from all 4 sensors, if they look OK you can start looking for more issues - the radar has nothing to do with ESP
the ABS module dying is a distinct possibility - they can easily be repaired cheaply - often with lifetime guarantee - where they remove the deliberately designed in tiny faults

MBWorld Fanatic!
I had this happen when I hit a pot hole. The dash was like a Christmas tree with ABS, ESP, Presafe Brake, Distronic inoperable and steering was tight.
Scanned with iCarsoft MB II and it clearly indicated left wheel speed sensor was bad. This was in several modules. Replaced the sensor and erased error codes from all modules and it was fine again.
I did not have any code relating to the radar sensors.

Thanks BOTUS. I have a iCarSoft 980 scanner. I will check again with live feed on the wheel sensors.
As a side note, do you know if the ESP module needs to be coded to the VIN?
Also, I found aftermarket radar sensors online at about 20% of the cost of OEM. Do these need VIN coding too?

I think so - search for easyphil written some info in depth about it
you ALWAYS have error codes for radars they pick up crap all the time in modern traffic (merc stupidly left these in normal diagnostic data capture)
