Held in place just with plastic tabs. It is tricky and hazardous to remove this old brittle plastic without breaking it. I broke one piece, and a tab on another but it still held fine. Work slowly in good light looking for each release tab, and gently lift and slowly work the piece out. Because I spend a stupid amount of money on my car, I went ahead and ordered all new pieces for it, which I'm actually putting on this morning. Be aware though that the parts for your color may no longer be available. I've bought several various (other) pieces over time that were the last piece available in the world, no longer to be made again. I believe one or two of these black plastic trim pieces were the last.
