Retrofiting S63 S65 CL63 calipers

I've done front and back, completely rebuilt them for under $1,000.
For reference this was done on a 2013 S550 4matic. This will not be a step to step guide but rather all the parts needed for the rebuild, how you approach it is up to you - if you're planning on retrofitting the calipers I expect you to have more than basic automotive knowledge.
You can buy perfectly working calipers online and not bother with rebuilding them, and save some money short term. I went with complete rebuild. I have access to more than average equipment and the process was very easy.
The calipers were sandblasted, and painted with 2 stage high temperature paint and clear coat.

Confirm fitment prior to purchase:

The steering knuckles (221-332-47-01 & 221-332-48-01) on the AWD model are the same as S63/S65/CL63, thus the caliper mounting is identical.
Same goes for the rear. You can verify fitment on mbparts.mbusa.com, find a VIN from S63/S65 on ebay, they usually list them along with the parts.

Parts needed:

Front RH caliper assembly - 0044203083
Front LH caliper assembly - 0044202983

Note: I've seen different numbers used for these calipers, these are the ones that i picked up specifically.
Some sellers list the actual bracket that holds the caliper as the part number, some list the metal front plate, others the individual caliper covers, so be aware that you might have different part numbers floating around.
Best option is to go to mbparts.mbusa.com and verify the part fits for any of the AMG variants.I paid $250 for both of the front calipers at my local junkyard. Best suggestion for US residents is to use car-part.com, that's where i found mine.

Rear RH caliper - A2214230881
Rear LH caliper - A2214230781

Purchased on ebay for $200 for both.

Front brake hose - A2214200948 (or look for aftermarket options, the length is ~54CM / 21.33 Inch.
The ones i used were Sunsong 2201423) - $18.40 each

Front Caliper connector hoses x 2 (Unsure of the OEM part #. Used Sunsong 2205960) - Purchased on Rockauto for $18.27 ea

Caliper slider pins and Slide Pin boots x 6 kits (4 pins and boots on each front wheel, and 2 on rear. a Kit usually includes a pair.. Many options available, used Raybestos H5025W and Dynamic Friction 34054031) - $2.41 for the slider kits, and $2.91 for the boots at Rockauto

Front Caliper seal kits x 4 (Carlson 15368 / FVP FH15368 / Raybestos WK924 / Acdelco 18H1163 / Centric 143.35041) - one kit rebuilds one caliper, the front set-up is dual caliper so you need 4 kits total - $5.59 per kit at O'rileys Rear Caliper seal kits x 2 - (Carlson 15365 / Centri 143.34018 / I used Raybestos WK940, they are all made in the same plant, come in the same packaging.) - $4.37 per kit at Rockauto

Bleeder screws - I have an assortment of them, they come out to be around $0.30 each.

Brake wear sensor - My old ones were still fine as i was not in need of brakes when i did the retrofit.

Brake Fluid - Since i opened up the whole system, i decided to go ahead and just flush it. I used Bosch ESI6-32N DOT 3, 4, 5.1.

So far, the total was about $600 with taxes, so that left me with a budget of $400 for the rest of the restoration.

Pads - multiple options available and vary by country. Just know you're shopping for S63/S65/CL63 not S550 anymore.
You'll get 4 pairs of pads for the front.

Rotors - Front is 390 Rear is 365. Brands all vary by country, just shop for the right car.I picked the most attractive price at Rock auto and purchased a kit and so far have been very happy with it, have put over 10k miles since i put them on about 9 months ago.
In the future i will be upgrading to girodisc 2 piece design. but that will double the price of the brakes. I didn't go all out with an expensive rotor+pad combo since i wasn't sure if the retrofit was going to fly.

Couple notes:

- Please follow the manufacturers specification for bleeding sequence

- 1) Passenger rear 2) Driver rear 3) Driver front 4) Passenger front.

- When you go all out and replace all seals on the calipers, the brakes will feel very spongy and soft. After putting about 50 miles on the new brakes, i bled them again. The sponginess was gone after about 200-300 miles. Do you need to bleed it a second time? Probably not, I just wanted to make sure I didn't screw something up.

- When installing the calipers, MAKE SURE YOUR BLEEDER SCREWS ARE POINTING UP. Otherwise you will never be able to bleed the brakes.

- If you have verified fitment online but couldn't wait and wanted to test the fitment of the brackets when they arrived without taking the old rotor off - it won't fit, don't be scared. The heights of the rotors are different. Guess how I know.

- DO NOT SKIP THE FRONT BRAKE HOSE - the original one that comes with S550 is about 4 inches too short. Guess how i know.

2013 S550 4MATIC
Thank you for the detailed post. So let me get this straight, the S63, S65, CL63 Calipers will go on a 2013 4MATIC without any mods? Just a straight swap? Front and Rear? I would like to do the swap as wel if it is just a straight swap. Will definitely not do the rebuilt just buy the front/rear calipers from ebay and do the swap. Any pics of yours done??

Yes sir - the only real requirement is the front caliper brake hose, the stock S550 hose is about 3-4 inches too short, you must get the longer one as mentioned in the post.

Thank you! They look amazing!! Excellent work

PS: So much for all the " Anectodes " they will not work without changing the knuckles or re-drilling and etc...

Excellent post... nice work OP.

Worth noting.... 19” wheels work with the S-65 brakes.

Rotors on hats will reduce unsprung weight for a further improvement.

I gave my 221 S-65 a Brembo big brake kit with six piston calipers and rotors on hats. Unsprung weight dropped by over 20 pounds.

Will these parts also plug and play on an S550 RWD only Benz?
