S 350 L, M272, startup rattle
Hi everyone,
I have had my S 350 L since 230.000 km. At 235.000 km, I changed the timing chain, guides, balance shaft, head gaskets, oil pickup tube seal, basically everything apart from the piston rings, rod and crank bearings.
Since then, we went up to 278.000 km, but this scenario always occurs :
When starting the car cold, or just after a few minutes, there is a loud rattle. It quiets down a lot after 3 to 5 seconds. It does come from the cam adjuster area.
Only when stopping (never does it while driving), a check engine light sometimes pops up indicating a right intake timing issue.
When rebuilding the engine, I did not insert the pins in the exhaust cam adjusters causing them to pop out of place and I had to replace them, with refurbished parts from China.
I doubt this has any correlation as I get the error for intake and not exhaust.
The fault is most likely not due to bad installation as otherwise the CEL would be on at all times.
I did a diagnostic with Xentry but forgot to take pictures, so I will do it the next time. The computer told me to replace the cam adjuster.
Before doing this I want to know if someone else can relate to this problem, and perhaps has fixed it in the past.
