pairing to what ?

unless you have a 2010 car (with NTG3.5) there is no "real" BT to connect anything too (and thats ONLY calls)

Not going to work.
I've tried on my 2008 S550 to pair an iPhone, but since about iPhone 6 there is no stock pairing device that works, and I believe since about iPhone 8 or 9 there is no aftermarket pairing device that works.
This is a dead end for this car. Planned obsolescence.
I now put the phone in the dashboard cubby and navigate like a pro using my phone!
Good luck.

It was 2014 with the introduction of iPhone 6 that wireless earbuds--and consequently broadcast of music--first appeared with major phones (major to MB means Apple)

Up until after then the only bluetooth pairing from phone to vehicle in a Mercedes was for telephone calls. That will very likely work with any iphone ever.

Aftermarket bluetooth receivers are available to connect to ipod connector or aux input in your glovebox. Clearly you select aux input with COMAND and you should expect data only on the screen between tach and speedo.

that is utter rubbish

No 221 with NTG3.0 headunit (aka 2005 to 2009) ever supported ANY Bluetooth connection for a telephone device
An OPTION on early cars was a BT connection usually on long wheelbase cars for a rear cordless handset to BT connect to the front UHI socket
A hopeless SAP handset (using a now very rare BT protocol of Sim Access Profile) coudl plug in to the front UHI and allow the car to take over a phone
A later simpler and far better BT puck by Mercedes came in 4 iteration all look the same but each one had later firmware worked perfectly well plugging in to the UHI and providing a BT phone call only connection
An aftermarket Viseeo device can in 3 flavours and plugs in the UHI socket works (but MUST set handset to NTG4 dip switch settings)

late in 2009 a 2010 MY facelift came with what looks the same headunit, but this is an update with a new NTG 3.5 headunit including a self destructing harddrive - and it came with BT phone call only connection and a strange propitiatory Aux socket in the glove box

throughout Apples entire incompetence they have had 3 different charging voltages for their devices, and untold issues with Bluetooth, because they believe all the standard BT protocols the world agreed upon can be ignored. And it works much better using hand written by apple monkeys "joke code that works better" - they are as every car manu will tell u, halfwits with no idea - and have ONLY ever written random-ware - a kind of morphing joke version of software - where one day to the next something might work sometimes
