the 221 seems fast coz although it makes little go below 4k rpm at least the gearbox lets you get there

the earlier cars, it's wait, spend 3 gallons, wait, wait some more, ready, GO !!!

other than that - if rot free the old one was a real Merc (just remember to glue all the interior trim back on, and buy some new brake calipers if you can find them)

I had heard that W126s were last hard robust Mercedes-Benz S Class cars and reliable too than their successors variants . However, due to their age and the date of production I find their interior cabin too boring, too simple and like that . Even W140s come close to level of boringness to when compared to today's modern cockpits , center consoles not to mention tech amenities as well .

W126 are a sunday driver today... I suggest before doing anything go and find one and test drive.

Tech back then was well not much but they are a good car - back when MB meant something.

126 cars.... Ancient engineering. Flexible chassis. Wires everywhere that do everything not done with vacuum (poorly). Naturally aspirated engines with two valves/cyl that underperform. Four speeds in the auto tragic that will pull away from a stop in second gear unless you give it a lot of throttle. HVAC that is marginal on it’s best day. Parts not as easy to find as 20 years ago. Everything fails and often. Window switches. Window motors. Window regulators. Door lock actuators will fail 3-4 annually. Vacuum operated. Tiny brakes that warp easily and wear out fast. Slow dull steering. HOW many drive belts on the front of a 5.6 liter!? I could continue.
