Key vs. Start Engine button

My 2007 S600 has push button start; I think they call it Keyless Go or some such nonsense. I have used the Start Engine button for years. Never used a key in the dash.

This week, I pulled the chrome button and used the key in the old fashioned way.

Does using the key in any way update the car's computer or update the Service Assist menu?

Yup close enough, keyless go is the feature when you have key in the pocket and can unlock by using the sensors on the door handle, what you use with the button is called keyless start. Some markets have keyless start standard and keyless go as an option.

What do you mean by update the car's computer or update the service assist menu?

Yes, that is the feature. My question is does it do anything else. When I insert the key, does the car read anything from the key other than immobilizer stuff?

I don’t think it has any function to update any software, but a nice thing is when key is used you do not need to apply brakes for starting the engine. This is nice when I work with Xentry that sometimes needs engine started and stopped. With the button I have to get in the car but with key in ignition I can just turn the key thru open window.

nope, nothing different, inserting the physical key prompts the car to check if it is the genuine key if it is, granted and lets you turn. The push button does the same when you press once, it communicates with the smart key, and if authorize it won't prompt key not detected message. When you turn physical key twice, you go into accessory mode, when you turn backwards you are back to off but for the push button you need to cycle through it.
