This axle fixable?

So I have been doing some suspension work on my 2007 S550 4matic. I removed the lower rearward control arm (spring arm I think), removed the upper control arm, sway bar links, and air strut. Driver’s side. I supported the knuckle with a jack and then lowered it down. Apparently the axle became disconnected when I did this? 2 bearings (rollers) came out. Can u just put the rollers back on and push the shaft back in? Does it also needs grease and how much? Not sure how to reconnect the boot as well. Hopefully it’s fixable. Any help would be appreciated. Rollers

You would have to rebuild that end, clean up, re-grease with a new boot. To do all of that you need to pull off the stuff at the tip in your photo. There's a snap ring and you have to pull off the piece that holds the 3 bearings. I would rebuild if this is the axle that originally came with the car and not some 3rd party replacement.

Thanks. It is original and I do want to rebuild it. I have another question about it. Are the 3 roller bearings held on by c clips so they can’t come off and I simply broke those? Because I would need to buy the clips but I can’t find them anywhere.

its a drive shaft is not an axel...

all you have done is popped the UJ off one end - never knew Merc used budget junk on there - thats what you got on a 40 year old Fiat Panda

if all thinks go wrong could just replace the driveshaft - no one should pull cars like this apart without knowing what's going to happen first - its a 2.5 tonne missile not a 900kg thing that tops out at 70 mph

It's not junk, which is why you replace the boot rather than replace with aftermarket which will definitely not last, ask me how I know.

No, they aren't broken, once that part comes out of the cup, the bearings can be easily pulled off, no clips involved. The key to this job is having a puller and the correct tool for securing the clamp that attaches the boot to the axle..

1: It’s an axle, not a driveshaft
2: It’s a CV joint, not a Universal joint
3: I’m not an expert, but not a newbie either. Passenger side already done with no issues. I had to remove so much of the driver’s side suspension that when I lowered the knuckle, the axle was able to be pulled out. An easy mistake I think.

Thanks for your help. I was worried there were retaining clips holding the roller bearings in. Nice to know there aren’t any.
