Coolant leak?
It’s only been 4 or 5 month since I had to visit a shop for its annual multi thousand $$$ upkeep.
I took a few 450 mile trips last few weekends. Last few days the coolant message came on in turns.
I climbed under the car to see what’s up and looks like there is a small trail of coolant from the lower hose and on to the tray under the car, hard to tell . Impossible to see where it’s coming from.
So I cleaned it up to see if it will show me more as time goes by.
it can only be a water pump or the lower hose with its metal connector and clamp.
I’m no longer maintaining a mere car, I’m maintaining a classic. Can’t say I miss my w126 I sold after I got this one as it was boring as hell.

And of course, if it is a water pump, there are tons of "while you are in there" parts to add to the confusion and cost like the pulleys, tensioners, belt, recovery tank (very prone to leaks at the seams of the plastic) and various hoses. Also, watch that radiator. Mine leaked at the seams at about 75K miles.

Classic car problems. The leak is likely from the water pump or that lower hose connector. Since you cleaned it, keep a close eye on the coolant level and check daily for fresh drips to pinpoint the exact source. Top it off with the correct MB coolant for now.
