What exactly is the issue, I see a screen that shows its set to Audio and a message saying Device Not Available. Phone, Navi, Video, Vehicle selections working or no?

Have you scanned the car to see if there are any fault codes that can lead you in the right direction?

Have you checked the fuses in the engine bay and the trunk to make sure they are not blown? Heres a link to 08 W221: https://charm.li/Mercedes%20Benz/200.../Fuse%20Block/

Have you inspected the trunk for signs of water entering?

All normal - its a std feature of the S class W221 - happens on every single one of them.

the Amp/Tuner combined module in the boot gives up - highly likely a re-flow issues with a chip set overheating and unsoldering itself from the circuit board - but most repairs don't last

if everything on the system operates normally but the sound vanishes - the Amp is dead - and sadly its stupid money - if you try secondhand aware nearly all are dead or about to die. Always check on FM tuner
the other common issues is the Sirius tuner dies (another module gives up) and it breaks the MOST circuit.

Thanks for the help, he pulled it out of the car and is gonna open it up and take a look and see if there is any obvious signs of damage/overheating... said if was VERY dusty and you can see there is a lot of dust on the exhaust vent on both the unit and the vent behind it....

again that's normal - exhaust, road filth fumes and 15 years of dust in the area - the egg crate on the inner wing is a massive hole designed to let flood water in to kill the car

you can clean the board till it looks like new and you won't see any area that causes the issue - they designed the failure with their usual precision

Thats funny, I have had so many mercs over the years and I have NEVER had a major mechanical like an engine or trans failure, but its this kind of BS that I have dealt with for decades owning MB products...

I snooped around a little, def not an easy part to find... I did run across one site that offered to rehab it for $2400....lol....

So what do you do??? Wait and gamble on a used part? ???

there is an almost identical part that runs in certain Hyundai's that ALMOST works plug and play - but is about a third of the Merc price... clearly its the same thing but with firmware / software to suit the controls they way they do it

many have done it - if you search w221 and Hyundai amp I expect you'll find three or four posts - they subsequently worked out its not that you get No vol control (although to a normal person that's what happens), if you press another button ( mute or something ) kind of updates to the new setting - what we need someone to do is be brave enough to flash the Hyundai Amp with Merc software - it might just go normal !!!

there is No Main dealership that would touch it - and no idny Merc specialist that have much of a clue about anything - so It would be the guy in my signature that might be able to help but I don't believe anyone has asked him
