Hi Everyone

I have a 2007 W-221 (S-350) . The car was running fine up until two weeks ago when I took it out at night to and parked it at the airport for around 30 mins . When I returned and tried starting it it was flashing the message 'Drive to workshop in one gear' and the engine refused to crank and the small rectangular box that highlights the PRND was not showing anymore. Had to bring the car back on a truck after disconnecting the drive shaft as there was not manual lever to release the gear from Park.

Since then I have scanned it using a launch scanner and found the following codes on it and also checked the wiring down at the transmission (both the round plug and the 5 pin connecter) neither seem to have any broken wires or corrosion. I have also checked the front SAM and could not find anything visibly wrong and also cheked all the ground wires.

Following is some of the error codes that the launch scanner is showing me at the moment. Could any share some thoughts or point me in the right direction as to what I should check to try and resolve this issue.

6107 No CAN message was received from control unit Engine control module or A80 (Intelligent servo module for DIRECT SELECT)
6108 Chassis CAN bus:No CAN message was received from control unit Engine control module.
6106 No CAN message was received from control unit Engine control module or N15/3 (ETC [EGS] control unit).

5841 No CAN message was received from control unit A80 (Intelligent servo module for DIRECT SELECT).
5822 No CAN message was received from control unit N15/3 (ETC [EGS] control unit).
5831 One or more signals sent from control unit N47-5 (ESP control unit) via the CAN bus is implausible.

The car has been driven around 50,000 km so far and has a new Bosch main battery and new auxillary battery as well. There was not shifting or transmission related issue up until this happened two weeks ago.

Your car's key computers have stopped talking. The most common cause is a failed Transmission Control Module. Check its fuses first, but you'll likely need a specialist to replace the module.

Thanks for the feedback. Am i correct to assume that replacing the Transmission control module requires coding / reprogramming of the module as well to talk to the existing Key / ECU etc ?

The codes suggest an ISM failure. That's the box that actually selects the gear position... Moving the selector to the column meant a change from the traditional selector switch connection using two boxes and wiring rather than direct mechanical linkages between shift lever and gearbox. The ISM is the selector switch and servo in one unit.

For security purposes, the ignition box, engine ecu, trans ecu and ISM are all coded to the key.

I either case you need a new unit coded to the car.

Give the circumstances surrounding the failure, I would suggest unplugging and removing the ISM, check it for water ingress and go from there giving the plugs a good clean whilst you're at it.
