Smile S600 V12 TT 115K miles and recent Long Trip

Hi All,

I just returned from my annual Winter Vacation in Cape Coral FL. Departing on 1/15 before the freeze I took the 2007 S600 on the long ride from Washington, DC to Cape Coral, FL roughly 1100 miles. Did the speed limits of 70 mph generally with some steady runs up to 85 mph and the car's computer reported 22.3 miles per gallon using 92-93 octane gasoline. Had no problems although I did throw one misfire on startup on the first hot day after the freezing temps a few weeks ago, but it cleared right away on a restart. No recurrence and I attributed it to the 50 degree change in outside ambient temp over that previous 24 hours. Imagine how the orange crop reacted and I suspect the car didn't like the cold any more than I did. Did not use any oil. Now back home.

The plan is to change out motor and transmission mounts, replace an oil cooler, and bore scope the 12 cylinders. While the engine is out, also going to replace all vacuum lines, sensors, and the ABC hoses and lines, new accumulators, and maybe rear shocks. If the engine needs it, I plan to do an overhaul. Also have several front and rear OEM wheels and plan to have the shop straighten the wheels. I did feel some new minor vibration after running into potholes on Interstate 95.

Mercedes reliability on a well maintained S600 was very apparent.

OP with 115,000 miles on a good running engine that isn’t burning oil.... Why would you consider tearing it down? Seems a fool’s errand more likely to introduce issues than solve them.

Why replace the oil cooler?

Engine mounts? Absolutely. No need to pull the engine.

Accumulators? Sure.

All the ABC hoses? You may be thinking of a 220 chassis car! 221 cars with ABC don’t suffer from pattern failures with ABC hoses.

Rear shocks? Leaking oil? Sloppy body motions? If not leave them well enough alone.

A dollar in a bet says she is likely due for front suspension lower arms. Look closely at front suspension upper ball joints and control arm bushings.

JohnLane has it.

I’ve done that FL (SRQ) to DC run a couple times. Nice and enjoyable in these if not as populated as the I-75 run. Good times.

Yes a well sorted Sonderklasse will spoil you in a hurry. Don’t add any AMG crack powder to it or you won’t recover.

Ask JohnLane, he’ll happily tell you.🤣

Cheers,

maw

I made the mistake this winter of over servicing my car. It's my hobby, so I generally look for things to do--especially over the winter when I'm not driving it. I've replaced all sorts of things that didn't technically need replacing. But, I ended up in too deep and inserting problems, and am still cleaning up a mess. Agree with JohnLane here about leaving well enough alone.

But if an ABC hose starts to "sweat" (very slowly leak) - do replace it. Or it will only get worse.

I would never pull apart the engine at this mileage - it will likely go back together far worse than it is now - engine building is a specialist skill very few have, and this one being so complex few workshops will have the space to put it back together clean - add in the fact sadly its a joke plated bore engine block - thus I wouldn’t even bother to look at the bores - will be nothing you can do to resolve any minor issues you might spot - it will just offend / cause unnecessary angst

get a https://www.terraclean.co.uk job done on the inlet side - service suspension bushes etc as it wears and enjoy it - spending the money on petrol and use the car - it will do it far more good than adding debris and bolting it back together half as well as they did in the clean room factory...
