Anyone considering the 63 AMG 4MATIC?

I've been talking to my dad about the new model and he's set on ordering one but he's asked me if I thought it was going to be worth the premium to order the 63 AMG over just a 550 with the AMG sport package.

Just wanted to hear some of your opinions, I'm assuming the amg with the expected options to run about 165k and a 550 around 130.

AMG does have a significantly more powerful engine, aero work, revised suspension/exhaust, and some other various touches so for 30k I don't think it's a terrible upcharge for what your getting...

I have an order in for a s63. I had a 2012 s63 that I traded in almost a year ago exactly for a g63. I loved the car, it was incredibly comfortable but had the "wolf in sheeps clothing" as the w221 s63 didn't look too much different than the s550 except for a slightly larger intake, badging and the exhaust tips. So for most people on the roads they think its just another s550. But at start up and when you want the power it is there and it just put a smile on my face.
I cannot wait to be back in an s.

If the extra $30k+ isn't an issue, it's an easy choice.

If the extra speed is more important than the AMG tidbits, a $3k ECU upgrade will bring you to stock S63 engine performance. The 4matic will be different so the overall 0-60 performance may be 1-2 tenth of a second slower , but we'll see that once these cars are in circulation.

I was considering a S63 but will probably go for a 550 with an ECU upgrade. I have all options so the difference would have been close to 40K. Most options in the 550 are still options in the 63 except for the premium package, MBC, and sports package.

Also considering I can get a discount on the 550 but not in the 63 only widens the price gap.

W221 S63 has ABC, like it a lot, but new S63 4matic has only Airmatic not ABC? if it's true, will go for a S550 with ABC or MBC.

S65 for me! Can't wait!!!!

That's correct the S63 4matic will not have ABC nor Magic Body Control (upgraded ABC).

my dealer asked me the same thing: I had my S class priced out at about 145-150.....
might as well get another AMG for that price

joshg120 08-30-2013 12:05 PM

We decided on the AMG model his sales rep is meeting with him next week to discuss the specs, told him i'd give him my input..

thinking diamond white exterior, black interior with the exclusive leather package, safety package (distronic, blindspot, etc), the base burmester stereo, panoramic sunroof, the 20" polished amg wheels.. think that's about it

Can't wait to drive this thing

phalen302 09-04-2013 11:45 AM

I was considering 550/s63 but couldn't wait. I stopped by my local Audi dealer couple of days ago and drove S8 - after that couldn't stop thinking about it. Picked it up over the last weekend.

My dealer was told me the delivery date of s63 would be in Feb-March of 2014.

Perfectly understandable, it is an amazing car.

So will the S63 use standard sway bars like S550? no flat cornering anymore??

S63

S63's will be showing up at least in november and perhaps earlier if you take pre-optioneded car. price of very well optioned car (premium burmeister, night vision, driver aids, etc.) will be under 160.

That is fair to say. 15K in options will get you a lot on the S63. Premium 1 is standard, no extra charge for bigger wheels.

My S550 has all options and comes out to be around $140K. I can probably get some discount on the 550 price. The S63 starts at that price and for me it would be in $170s for the same configuration. Its hard to justify the 30K - 40K difference. Just got a GL63 and the difference was more reasonable. Most options on a GL are standard on the GL63 unlike the S63. I will probably wait few years and then trade the 550 for the 63.

Got the updated ordering guide (as of 9/9/13) for the s63 from my dealer. had an order in already but the ordering guide helped a lot in lowering the price of my order.

a few observations:
- the 5 spoke on the s63 is different than the s550, a lot more sporty
- the standard seats are also different than the 550. it doesn't have the horizontal lines down the middle of the seat that gives the seats look like a spine in my opinion.
- steering wheel options are leather with perforated sides as standard, leather and wood, and leather with dinamica.

i was able to bring my options from almost 20k down to 11K.

Sam I see your point but you Can't really compare a GL63 to a S63. The S63 has significantly more of a demand and is quite desirable v. the GL63 (while quite awesome) is a niche car. MB did not even go through much effort to make the GL63 look too different from the GL550.

MB has to give you a lot of stuff to make the GL63 appealing. That is how you sell something that does not really have the reason to exist.

And the S63 isn't a niche car?

S63 does have a lot more options than the GL63. The other thing I was disappointed with S63 is the lack of ABC or MBC - hopefully these features will be added in the upcoming years.

Bigger Niche. Like the Bay Area, Conn suburbs of NYC & LA.

For example the last gen CL550 lost ABC the moment it was 4MATIC as standard

If I have to guess 4MATIC kicks ABC out the door. Unfortunate, but you get the power down.

Q. is the S63 offered without 4matic in Europe? if so is ABC available

My GL63 has both 4 matic and ABC. In Europe the S63 is available with MBC.

LETO 09-11-2013 10:56 PM

is "active curve" the same as ABC?

KUNMB 09-12-2013 11:46 AM

ABC/MBC is a must, won't buy a S without it.

I wouldn't be too concerned with an S needing ABC, that's old tech. I can't imagine that a brand new, re-designed flagship sedan would have a worse or rougher ride than its predecessor.
And MCB is designed to work on European-style large flatish road bumps, not potholes or small deep road imperfections, etc., and not in the dark or in bad weather.

Here is some verbage for the new car:

Mercedes' S63 AMG 4Matic boasts a more sporting suspension set-up with conventional steel springs and Mercedes-Benz’s new ADS Plus adaptive damping system, providing continuous adjustment of the dampers in two modes: Comfort and Sport. It also receives revised geometry, with added camber and a larger anti-roll bar up front along with a stiffer sub-frame at the rear.
