Naturally, opinions are subjective even though I feel quite the opposite re. the W222 vs. the W221. As stated a while back, when the W221 came out people were in an uproar about these terrible fender flares and generally un-classy design. Who cares... W221 was a cool design but people come around and later defend it.
I however can't imagine how the e-class could be mistaken with the new S. There is no similarity anywhere in the front end, rear, size or anything.
Must be the kind of people looking at a Volvo and the MB and think they are the same...

The front end of W222 and W212 is very similar to an untrained eye. The W212 was black, the W222 was white, and the relative position on the floor was such that the size difference was not obvious.

I saw a W222 next to a W212 as well. I think the point here is that the W222 is a somewhat "down the middle" design meant to be relatively easily palatable, therefore it doesn't necessarily "stand out" next to an E Class, especially as we go forward when the C and presumedly next E look identical to it.
To me, the W222's presence on the road is almost identical to the W221 until you make out the details.

The 221 is sitting in my garage right now. I'm actually looking at it as I type. I've been to the dealership and test drove the 222. The 222 wipes the floor with my 221. Shares similar lines but not looks. Me and my wife just sat at the dealership for an hour and just stared at it......and stared........and stared.........and stared.........and stared..........and just slobbed at the mouth at how so much better looking it is...... The presence is 10 steps forward, the stance is perfect, the wheels (20" AMG) take your breath away, and the grill.......OMG the grill........just screams MB is back!
Yall can take this thread 10 pages if you want to downplaying the 222......but in the end yall blowing smoke.......

skrontz, I feel exactly the same way! 140 is a legend! When W220 came out I was very disappointed with Mercedes. I hated it. This plastic interior and ugly headlights made it look like a copy of Daewoo. Just me. I understand there are a lot of people who like W220. For the first time ever I was starting considering BMW. IMO BMW did outstanding job in design in years 2000-2007. I am glad Benz got back on track with their W221.

Maybe that's the thing: those who really liked W220 love the W222 as well. Those who liked the W140 prefer the W221. I'll still probably end up getting the W222 as I see no strong alternatives, but definitely not as excited as I was about the W221.

That`s where I respectfully disagree. I see W222 more like comeback of W140. Just look how immense is the hood!! Same way it was done on a W140 Panzer-style. W221 is a beautiful car but more like in a sporty way. I`m glad Benz is going back to its values of commanding presence with the new S. If I wanted a sport car I would long ago get BMW.

The W220 looks like a Daewoo? What on earth possessed you to say that?

I also like how the W221 facelift grille is more "pointy" than the very rounded and un-aggressive grille shape of the W222 (it's aggressive simply because it's huge but not because of its shape), which gives it a crisp and dynamic luxury look.
Both hide their sizes VERY well and look very compact for their sizes in person (a great thing).
The W221 though has its own flaws as well. I'd rather have the W222 if I had to have one, for its mechanical and technological evolutions. I'd say design wise, both put up a tough fight VS one another, each having their merits. At the end of the day, the W222 is an evolution of the W221, very similar in presence but very different in the details.

[QUOTE=skrontz;5835478]I loved W140 from the moment it came out, hated W220, and then loved W221 again. The fender flares gave it a very powerful presence, yet it still looked fairly compact from the outside.

The W220 was not necessarily a bad car. It looked good but the interior had a few plastics. Whenever I drive on the highway my W220's gear knob vibrates that concerns me because of how Chrysler poked into their business while development. It's great to drive but it feels like the nuts and bolts are not tight or something. The W140, W221, and W222 feel strong. Prices of the W221 have droped alot since the W222 came out. I have seen a certified W221 with 165k and every single option (but distronic) for 23,995. I would not reccomend getting it because it will be hard to sell.

Looks are very subjective and sometimes they need to grow on you but so far Mercedes has done a great job of designing exteriors that age well and in line with the model range they represent.
The only thing that has not grown on me is the hideous plastic interior of the W212. It's like they designed the entire interior of that car with a trapezoid and ruler.
