Gas Mileage??
From all my experiments so far in city driving, I have been averaging about 18 mpg. The trick is not to be too aggressive on the gas pedal after a complete stop and to anticipate stops. I do use the ECO mode all the time. I also use the Auto Pilot option a lot in city traffic. Btw, my odometer is now just over 1,000 miles. I have not been going more than about 75 mph (also varied the speed quite a bit) on the highway and I have been gentle with the acceleration for the first 1,000 miles (break in period) since that's what the manual suggests.
In any case, that's my experience so far. I am convinced that this car does a fantastic job with gas mileage on the highway.
It takes 3 days to go from 100% to 30%.
Oddly enough I feel my previous 550 got better gas mileage.
I am having the same experience.
I believe I got better gas mileage on my '08 S550 4matic compared to my '14 S550 4matic. I do a combo of city/highway driving with my average mpg on the '08 was about 17.5 mpg while my '14 is about 16 mpg with the same type of driving and same routes. Very interesting in deed. With the high highway numbers posted by some I thought it was just me that got "bad" gas mileage relatively speaking. Of course I could drive my '12 Ford F-150 and get 11 mpg so I should not complain to much.
My 08 S550 definitely better on gas mileage in city driving and it did not have an eco mode!

My '08 and '14 had/have the 19 inch AMG wheels that come with the AMG Sport Package.

My 02 also had 19"
Both got SO MUCH BETTER gas mileage than current 14.
I feel like I fill up to 100% and perhaps 10 minutes later after driving a few miles, im at 95%. Then 90% when I park and I've only been on the road 15 minutes.
Wheel size probably has some impact but as you stated, the type of driving one does seems to have a greater impact then it did on say my '08 S550 4matic.
I seem to get more disparity in gas mileage depending on if I am easy on the gas peddle vs. more aggressive driving. It appears from my experimentation that all highway driving and being easy on the accelerated can get gas mileage approaching upper 20s while my type of driving seems to get in the lower teens.
Guess I better try using the ECO button if I want better mileage---NOT!
I will just go through more gas since I love being aggressive with this car. Man I would love the S63 but the S550 goes like a bat out of hell if one drive aggressive with it. Using the paddle shifters reminds me of the time I did the AMG Challenge (now called AMG Academy I believe). This car is fast!
