Something I noticed about 4matics and staggering wheels...
On all w221, 07-13 S classes, if you have a 4-matic, all 4 tires and wheels are the "same size".
I just saw a 2015 S550 at the dealer, 4 matic, and it had staggered setup from factory! Mercedes has never done this on the 4-matic, with the OEM setup. I just thought this was cool. Not sure if they had this avail for the 2014, but the 2015 has it.

Yes I have wider in the rear/staggered wheels on my 2014 S550 4-Matic Sport Package with 19 inch AMG wheels. You are correct, my 2008 S550 4-Matic Sport Package with 19 inch AMG wheels were the same tire size/wheel size on all four tires/wheels.

Four-wheel drive systems must have front and rear tires of the same outer diameter. Otherwise the different rotations-per-mile will wear out the transfer case.
245/45-19 and 275/40-19 happen to both have essentially identical diameters. That's the reason that they are a rare permissible staggered setup for a 4WD car.
