Brilliant observation!
That's exactly what I felt and complained about when riding/comparing my '08 CL600 and '13 Cl63. Tranny is THE weakest point of the car.
Joke of the house was, 5 minutes after parking CL63 in my driveway ... oh look, the car finally downshifted from 3rd to the 2nd gear. What a piece of garbage. Pathetic.
PS,
let me not even start about my CL63's $h!tty engine.

Nothing's Changed for the 2016's
Well, on the one hand, I feel a little better that I'm not the only one who's disappointed in the downshifts in my new 2016 S63. On the other hand, looks like the dealer is not going to be able to fix it. What's worse is that the transmission in my 2014 Porsche Turbo S with PDK is perfect in all regards. Perfectly smooth and quick in all shifts, up or down, with no clunkiness at all. Mercedes should be embarrassed and ashamed of the comparison.

Just reinforces the notion that there is no such thing as "one size fits all" in these designs, even with the available adjustments. You can't please all the people all the time. About all a consumer can do is drive the cars and determine if the characteristics available suit them or not.

The W212 AMG forums are full of complaints regarding the E63's MCT transmission, which I guess is the same as yours. Supposedly there was a software update for 2016, but not everyone's happy with it.

2019 S63 Transmission Clunks
I have a similar issue.
On occasion and either from start or from slow roll and when accelerating the shift can be very harsh/clunky, And also when switching to PARK at the end of a drive it can slam into PARK.
This does not happen often but when it does it clearly interferes with the ride/experienced. I cant imagine this is "designed into" the Transmission.
So far dealer cant find the problem and it does not throw a code.
I am not confusing this with the snappy shifts when in manual or Sport/Sport+ mode- that is fine and I understand its a bit more aggressive then C mode shifts.
Any thoughts?

If they have not already done so request dealer check for any software updates and readapt transmission using Xentry. Since no codes, due to dealer discretion may require lead tech or shop foreman witness concern before doing so.
