Android operating systems have 80% market share in the smartphone space. Why the hell would mercedes design a car around a phone that only 1 out of every 5 people use?
Also, lose the 80s nightclub lighting color options. Neon purple? in an S-class? WTF?

also don't know how tough it is: but why not MORE colors? my daughter loves the 80's nightclub neon purple; she's 6
not to mention the average s-class buyer is in his 60s
The Best of Mercedes & AMG

Whether that translates to S class buyers I don't know, but the Android operating platform certainly has the overwhelming majority of the market.
Plus, Apple is a brand that is far more marketable for Mercedes or any car maker to join in with, just look at CarPlay and the excitement surrounding it. You don't hear as much about whatever Android's equivalent is. I actually (currently) have an phone that runs Android, but realize that "Android" isn't a phone, it's a general, ubiquitous OS that gets heavily skinned and ransacked unless you have a Nexus. That discordance/fragmentation is another reason why Apple is perhaps the only seamless hardware/software company that a car maker can seamlessly work with.
As for the S Class. It's not tech related, but for a car of such mass, I'd think that it should provide a lot more frontal headroom. I also agree that the screen placement is un-elegant, and harsh in its large, flat squareness. Whether it's the lesser of two evils being the crude "faux-Tablet glued onto the dash" trend is a different story. Either way, I hope in due time manufacturers go back to actually sophisticatedly designing screens into the design architecture, rather than seemingly lazily just going "here's the largest screen we could fit somewhere.... anywhere."
