2014 S400
Hi all
Here is a video of a noise level app on my iPhone placed on the dashboard of my S400. This was me driving home on a normal Tokyo road at about 45kph.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5P-_...ature=youtu.be

It may not sound bad but believe me 80dB of road noise wears on the nerves.
There is a Japanese expression which may explain MB Japan`s refusal to even look at my car. It translates as "after you catch a fish you don't need to feed it".
Anyway exasperation has won and I have traded my S400 for a second hand Jaguar XJ, which will arrive early next week.
It is a pity as apart from the road noise the S400 is overall a nice car. But enough is enough.

What? I don't hear anything in that video? You traded a S for a Jaguar, good luck with that.

There is sound on the video, I have re-checked. But whatever it is a video of a decibel meter and would only have meaning to someone who can relate to what these figures mean.
Thanks but I ran out of luck when I chose an S Class and shame on me for believing the hype.

Ok. I downloaded that free app you used and tested it in my car. First, the app is a piece of ****. The lowest possible whisper I could muster hit 78-80db. At 45mph on a smooth road my car registered 77-80db. And it was VERY quiet in the car.

I think it's your perception that's the problem...

I also downloaded the app and used it inside the house and it was reading inconsistent high figures.

I agree with Emilner, that this could be a perception issue, have you tested the same appon your new Jaguar?

Perception is not an issue. 80dB is noisy. At rest with the engine running my S400 read 58dB which is about right and shows the app is working. If you are not getting that kind of figure at rest then the app is not working. Getting a firm baseline is imperative, without it reading are meaningless.

These are the types of figures to expect. I will be getting my Jag next Monday and will repeat the test.

You missed the point. The car is not 80db. A Ferrari at full throttle usually will hit 78db, sometimes 80- your car is not anything like that. Don't place a $100k bet on a garbage free app that clearly is wrong...

According to this at 65mph an S500 is 60db while the jag is higher. Best of luck.

Everyone here knows what decibels are, I'm starting to think you're the one that isn't so bright here. I'm really curious to see you do this test with your Jaguar. S-Class is no hype, you got a bad one, IF there is a problem to begin with. A Jaguar XJ isn't half the car a S-Class is, not in any way other than how it looks. Like I said before, good luck with a Jaguar. They aren't anywhere near the engineering a Mercedes is.

Look. I am posting here only because MB Japan totally refuses to even look at my car.
The app is working correctly and the figure of 80dB is correct. I will be comparing with my Jag but a get the sneaky feeling that some people are on here with the remit of trying to defuse legitimate complaints.
As to which car is better. To each his own...

I clearly wouldn't accept 80db in the car either, provided this is the correct measure. S550 is definitely in the low 60's...

We in the US are spoiled with our service even though many complain about their dealers. I know that MB service in the UK, France and Germany is lousy in comparison.

Refusal of a US dealer to check on an issue like this would involve lawyers in a real hurry.

IMO moving to a Jaguar is a real downgrade. Since you know how Japanese dealers are like, a test drive before purchase would have helped.

Good luck

We are just trying to give you advice. It's clear that your app is crap. I downloaded it and a whisper was 80db. As someone who used to work in the audio industry I can tell you that you do not have an accurate perception of decibel levels. A sports car under full throttle can approach and sometimes exceed 80db. It's on the border where prolonged exposure can result in hearing damage.

You have not been very mature, nor articulate in this discussion. Suggestions have been made continuously and they are ignored by you. It's like you magically want a forum member to wave a wand and fix your car. Maybe it's a language barrier, but anyone who would dump a brand new $100k (US) car because of a garbage free app does not have a rational decision making process.

I hate to say it, but I'm calling troll at this point.

That's all I have to offer, checking out...

OK, we all hope you are very happy with your Jag. Sorry it turned out like it did, but we are all happy for you. Can we now please END this thread, pretty please?

I don't understand, why wouldn't they look at the car? Clearly if that is the true noise level there is a problem? Have you driven another new S-Class off the lot? What engine is in the W222 S400? Clearly barring you getting a lemon, a Jaguar doesn't even compare. It's a nice, but outdated and outclassed car on nearly all fronts.

This gentleman is now driving away from us in his Jaguar. Let's all just wish him well and wave GOODBYE!

As a follow-up I would request that you drive your new to you Jag at the same speeds over the same road and repost what your app displays.
