Misaligned Fuel Filler Door

Getting close to pulling the trigger on a new '15 S550 but noticed the fuel filler door on the car we like is very badly misaligned....I see thanks to K-Tiger-there's a service bulletin dated 10/14 but it does not give the usual specifics of what the repair entails. I have read that this issue is quite common on the new C class cars and the entire assembly needs to be replaced as its all plastic and the door is actually glued to the opening mechanism which then requires painting. I'd like to know if anyone has had this campaign done and/or had this issue? I'd also like to know what the solution entails as my dealer says they now just cut the plastic tabs but those on the new c class forum say it requires all the above steps.

On a side note I don't know how this stuff gets past all the various MB quality control points especially because it so obvious on a light colored car...not good.
Thanks.

No mention of assembly being replaced requiring painting per parts section.

I've had the fuel filler door on my 2015 S550 re-aligned once - a few months after I took delivery of the car. Almost 8 months after the repair, the fuel filler door is again out of alignment & needs to be looked at again. The dealer replaced the hinge mechanism the first time - no paint work involved.

Our 2016 S550 build early July came in with misaligned door. Dealer did the fix mentioned above. This does not speak well of a real fix.

Wow that solution looks super sketchy! Cut off 1mm off all of these tabs here and there, and stick a felt pad to make it look symmetrical.

If I had an example 1 misalignment, I'd just deal with it.
I've looked before, and definitely my car doesn't have an example 2 misalignment. But I'm gonna have to take a look at my car again for an example 1 misalignment.

I think these two example defects are common--surprisingly.

My 2016 that was manufactured in August has the example 1 misalignment. Since my car is black it is hard to notice but it clearly is misaligned. I have not decided yet but I think I will just live with it the way it is since I did not even notice it and I am very picky about these things.

Finally got around to remembering to look at my fuel door, and I'm pretty sure I have an example 1 misalignment. But it's so so so slight that you seriously cannot tell unless you had read this thread. I guess I'm one of the lucky one =)

Mine is exactly the same. I am not touching it.

Based on the above pic I would not touch it either, but the examples we've tested (including a coupe) were quite poor and the dealer said need to be corrected.

I would not let the workshop fix the fuel filler door misalignment unless it is so bad that it touches the fender when closed (like mine did before it was fixed).

The supporting part is hygroscopic and the alignment changes anyway a bit over time (depending on the weather etc.).

I am also one of the lucky ones I guess as it looks ok to me. Build date is March 2015.

Had my one year service and got the misaligned door fixed. They did a good job. Looks good.

Interesting to read this thread.

Even more interesting to see Mercedes have a fix for both problem.

As in the UK dealers seem to pretend its a one off thing.

I know 3 people personally that drive a W222.

Two are 2016 and one 2017.

Both the 2016 have this issue.

Mine has both misalignments

Be Happy! My front passenger door molding at top of door is off by almost 1/4 " Dealer will not touch the door to re-align under factory warrantee....

I had the fuel filler door aligned. No big deal or worth discussing.

Should be be under warranty as there is a service bulletin out there.

Make an appointment and have it fixed under warranty. The dealer has no say in this if the door is not meeting factory specs.

IMO If the the dealer is not helpful, go to another one. Good dealers are measured by their good service departments. This is how they earn my repeat business, not just with a good discount.

Don't you think it is beneficial for the information to be well publicised?

My S350d had this issue when collected and i was met with excuses and how they had never saw it before.

A friend of mine was also fobbed off by his Dealer.

Thanks to this thread we now have 100% undeniable proof that the Dealers have been less than honest in regards this issue.

Which is surely one of the functions of a Forum.

To inforn new owners and owners with an issue that is new to them but not new to others.

i am not sure how you would expect it to be publicized?
It is certainly known at the dealers (at least in the US) but unless there is a recall, customers won’t be informed. That makes sense as certain issues might manifest themselves only with some customers.

Your issue appears to be a less than helpful dealer which is something I see quite often mentioned out of the UK.
I like the forums because they fill that gap plus provide a lot of knowledge that is lacking at the dealer level as well.
Edit: Removed info that was already part of the thread.

Good luck!

i think you are misunderstanding my point.

This thread informs the owners that have the issue.

As when I pointed it out to the Dealer on collection they said they have never seen that issue before.

A mate had similar experiences, though his was aligned when he picked his up new and it gradually started to sit proud at the top edge.

His Dealer also said they had tried to adjust it but couldn't find a problem.

So now, thanks to this thread, 2 Mercedes S Class owners can go to their Mercedes Dealer and produce paperwork to show the Dealer that and so not be fobbed off.

Just because it doesn't benefit you or some others doesn't mean it won't benefit some people.

That is why I feel threads such as this have value on a forum.

I didn't say Mercedes should be informing Owners of a problem such as this.

Understood but you somehow seem to believe that I don't think it to be beneficial to be publicized.
I said it's not worth discussing because it's a 3 year old issue and a simple fix with all information previously published in more than one thread.

I am happy to can use the info to properly counter your and your friends dealer that are either too lazy to look up the service bulletins, lying to you or are plain incompetent. I hope they will do it for free as well...
