Though the new W222 chassis S-class has just been presented to us, it appears testing is underway for the mid-cycle refresh.

Doesn't look that much different on outside than my 2015 S550.

i hope we do indeed see that steering wheel shown in the photo; it looks WAY better than the 80s-era lincoln town car-type steering wheel we have now.

Looks like headlights are revised, rear apron gets a led reverse light bar, and new steering wheel. It also said gesture control like BMW and 9 speed tranny.

And HOPEFULLY some new wheel designs!

Just a couple notes:
The steering wheel is a newer design but the steering wheel that Lovin has is already standard in Europe for any car with the AMG package.

Also, the rear led light bar is standard on all Euro bumpers already since 2013, It was omitted from US models for unknown reasons.

The interesting part is the headlight which is most likely going to have the matrix LED lighting that is going into the new E-Class.

Outside of the US, the S-Class does come with 2 different version headlights already. The one you know from the US and this one, which is the the base LED headlight option.

9 speed tranny is already the only production option outside the US for MY2016 S550's

^^ So basically nothing new in the refresh? In the past there were more cosmetic changes. Larger air intakes, grille, etc

I am sure there will be several upgrades as in every facelift but the pics have little to do with the actual future model.

This is simply the current model with some new bits tacked on for testing purposes. The thread title is incorrect...

Actually, this looks just like the new E-Class steering wheel.

I notice there are no buttons between the screens. It's all one now. I wonder where they put those buttons now.

Maybe they put them into the command system. Hope not. Still easier to press a button than scroll through a menu. (and I am a fan of the command system)

All they need to do is add some fender flares for the refresh.

I've heard something that the new E Class will have some sort of rear "Cross Traffic Alert" system--similar to what GM has--that will detect traffic coming towards your rearward path of travel as you back up. Can anyone confirm this and do we know what MB will call this system? I sure hope it makes it to the 2018 S.

I sure hope they have cross traffic alert. Even my lowly 2014 Grand Cherokee Summit has it. It's a great feature that MB should have included in the driver assistance option package for the new S Class.

IMO, latest S-Class is best-engineered car on planet today

Biggest poss areas of improvement:

Jerky gearbox in urban driving (in 65s; 63 gearboxes have been lemony disasters for past ?7yrs ever since MCT): solve the damn software: no. of gears/MPG is utterly irrelevant in a high-tq, >$100K commuter car in US: world's wealthiest country w/world's cheapest cars, cheap fuel and awfully short daily urban commutes for affluent......though 1st World's worst pavement quality in a nation far wealthier than Germany which arguably has world's best pavement despite crap weather like Eastern US

Proper perf tires/wheels on 550s to maximize braking perf and active safety

Proper sports steering wheel: critical ergonomics (and aesthetics) for any driver who values active safety

Use better materials on the bank of buttons on left side of dash (for HUD, etc): utter crap materials/aesthetics vs rest of S65 interior quality which IMO dwarfs that of any car on planet today at any price, incl SL65, F12 and all those silly $1MM kit cars sold by VW, Fiat, etc

It would be nice to have all plastic buttons and switches replaced with metal similar to the new 7 series.

Also one color for interior surfaces regardless of interior color ordered. I do not prefer the multi-color doors and center consoles that do not match the seat color for certain leather color options.

I hope those awful fender flares NEVER return.

Hmm... the 2018 S-class will be borrowing the 2015 C-class steering, looks exactly same (with the exception of 2 push buttons ... there you go:

How do you have a red S Class? In your sig.

I see it's a C Class... tricky. you. Wish they had that color on the S550

For the refresh, I would really like to see them make the S more easily distinguishable from the lowly C. And, by then, we'll have the new E added to this mix of inbreeding. That's one of the things I loved about the W221: you never mistook that elegant saloon for any other car.

It doesn't. It's based on the new E-class

Yes, they gotta swap out that current wheel. I can't find the image I was looking for that someone posted comparing it to a smiley face, but a quick search of w222 smiley wheel brought up this

Are we sure this is a 2018 and not a 2017 because the previous cycles would suggest that the refreshed model would come in 2017, not 18'? and plus I have been holding off until the refresh comes out, and may have to rethink that if it doesn't come until 2018

Is there any concrete proof because in 2017 the new e-class comes out, which will have more advanced tech features than the S-Class. So it only makes sense for them to update it with these new features in 2017 to maintain the s-class's stature.
