S vs E vs C
I cross-posted this on the new E forum. It's a nice visual comparative of the S, E and C classes.

well then, seems it's our fault for buying so many redesigned S classes

This sure looks pretty bad on paper, but for some reason, it never seems to be this way when you see the cars in person.
I think it must be the interiors. They are pretty different.

,,, and so is the actual ride. historically, there is such a night and day difference in the actual ride experience amongst the s and all other benzo classes. i think people often forget that it is more than just looks ,,,

When I get a loaner C or an E class I know immediately that it is not an S. Maybe they look alike but as they say looks could be deceptive.

I hear that people can't tell apart the C-Class from the S-Class when they see the car. I could buy the argument when looking at pics only as they can easily be scaled to size.
In real life, the C-Class looks just small with its (typically) higher ride height and tiny trunk lid. No comparison to an S-Class. Simple small versus large sedan.
The next argument is when they see an oncoming C-Class on the other side of the highway or rearview mirror and can't tell it from the S-Class.
So that has to with distance and that the LED eyebrow has a somewhat similar shape.
I would also like to see a better differentiation between the models but I can see the reasoning. The current S-Class is highly regarded worldwide as the standard for luxury cars, far more than the W221 ever was.
As stated here before, the typical C & E Class cars are vastly different in real life, both in interior and driving experience. I never mistook a C-Class loaner for anything else that what it was...
But I was surprised when I saw a pic posted on the W213 forum which makes me think that MB's were also quite similar in prior decades.
Put some bright LED's on these cars and tell me how well you could differentiate them in the rearview mirror

For its share price, DAI needs to generate as much profit as it can, however
Reality is 95+% of luxury car buyers can't drive and are buying a brand, so mfrs need to create what may sell to morons w/some money
If was short of cash, would just 2yr lease a new C?300 until could afford more
Rest of MB lineup is fairly useless/poor value until S65 Coupe (sedan if had small kids)...also w/2yr lease....any car is arguably more obsolescent than iPhones' 1-2yr cycles...given dangers of decaying airbag systems/sensors, etc
AMG w/o 65s would be utterly useless/irrelevant: default then would be S550 w/MBC and perf tires

I bought my car because of how it meets my needs and my taste not for others. I do not mind that MB cars look the same. It reminds me of coach, business and first class in a airplane.

The trick is not not buy in on "I have to have it all all the time".

I think some people consider a car as an element of some computer game, when they drive the car having some outside view of it. I rarely can see my car outside in motion, only when a technician brings it to me after a service. I do not care how it looks from any angle, or what shape headlights have, and so on. An exterior appearance makes sense how easy to spot it in a crowd parching lot, I can tell like when I had Lexus I several times tried to open some other car because I couldn't see much difference. I am more concerned how car looks inside. How easy to see all indicators, and how easy to reach all controls. From this perspective I would compare all these trims. Certainly S is hands down winner, easy to stop in a lot, very spacious and comfortable inside, nice good quality materials, rich wood trims, amazing leather, good controls, wide displays..

FYI
While the C, E & S-Class share a similar overall design, Mercedes seems to have heard the complaint that many models look the same in the rearview mirror.
Most people only really see the LED eyebrow, so Mercedes is planning to make the following distinction:
C-Class: Single LED eyebrow
E-Class: Dual LED eyebrow
S-Class: Triple LED eyebrow with multi-beam LED (MY18 - facelift)

Thats a cool distinction, glad I didn't yet change my aging MB.

Here's my take on on these top three models :
W222 S Class: Unmistakably big version of the W205
W205: A shrunk and wanna be W222 outside and less expensive W222 inside
W213 : A transition in between . It is ghastly similar to W205 exterior wise almost at every angle while interior features a display in which one find it more suitable unlike W205's knock off monitor
W205 = S tification of the C Class
W213 = It's like mongrel C tification of the E Class spiced up by W222 hints inside
