First Mercedes.

My combo for over 20 years has been a pick up truck and a 911 of some ilk, with my wife loving her A6s the whole time. I'll always have a pick up until the bitter end - I don't know how I ever lived without one.
Latest 911 was a '15 991TT and I didn't care for the PDK, so I added a Boxster GTS MT (love it). Wasn't driving the 911 much, so I went to look at an S class as I have never had a regular sedan as a DD. Oh my God - an orgy of technologic wonder! Went for a ride two Saturdays ago (back to back v a Panamera at the P dealer next door); brought the wife back the following Monday for a ride. Placed an order that day and had them pick up the 911 on Tuesday as a pre-trade.
I usually do at least some research before jumping in on a totally new car, but not this time. Leap of faith, I guess.
Due to be built "Third decade" of March and in by end of April. Or so I'm told.
Obsidian/black Napa/burl walnut. Premium/Warmth and Comfort/heads up/Night vision/Splitview/Driver assist/Surround view/comfort box.
The NightView and split view combo eliminated any inventory available in black which is why I don't have one already. $350 for the Comfort box is absurd, but I'm sure I'll use it.
I'm pretty sure the build is locked, but did I miss anything or any bad picks (so I can feel bad for leaping before looking when I find out the car can't be changed)?
Really looking forward to driving it.

And how are people attaching front license plates (I must)? Did not get the Sport package, but don't see a spot. On the Porsches, there are aftermarket holders that screw into the front tow hook receiver.

Thanks; can't wait. I am very curious about front plate solutions if someone could/would chime in.

They will drill the front bumper unless you tell them not to, you'll hear the by law we're required to, etc but they won't if it means they will lose a sale

Night view, have it and similar to others never used it beyond trying it out

Well, I need to put one one here. There are several aftermarket makers for Porsche. I was hoping to find one for this car but the Skene Design doesn't seem to fit.
Sorry to hear about the Night View; seems like a great concept since I spend a lot of time in deer country. Not inexpensive either.

It looks like this might work, if anyone else is interested:

I've been emailing with them and they seem confident it will work with both the sensors and surround cam.

I haven't ordered yet, so I'm appreciative of any other suggestions.

I too at first thought the Night View was just an expensive item. But since I have lots of deer around my house and within two miles of my house, I purchased it. It has save my '16 S550 4matic a number of times at night so it is an item that is worth it if you drive a lot at night with deer or other animals near you.

Thanks. Good to read. Yes, we are rural and I'm an avid bowhunter for deer (see "we are rural").
I'm new to this forum, but I tried to post a link to a supplier of front plate (no drill) brackets for this car and the post didn't show up ("must be reviewed by moderator" or something like that popped up). It's Craven in Portland and it seems like it may work for those interested. Use the Google I guess.
I spend a lot of time on Rennlist (for years) and never had a post "withheld"...

Unless I'm mistaken, tow hook receiver port/threads/size are standard for all German cars so you can pick from any of them.

Yes, I believe you are 100% correct and thanks. I didn't look closely at the dealer and no one I know drives one to peek at.
It looks I'll be ordering the Craven unit. In an email exchange, they claim it is compatible with Surround View and all other sensors on the S class.

That is very encouraging. I traded a '15 991TT (non S, since i didn't want CL wheels or ceramic brakes) on this order. It was my first and only 911 without a manual transmission (and last); I found the PDK very boring. That car is just too fast to have any fun driving on the street IMO. OTOH, I'm smitten with the '16 Boxster GTS with MT and X73 sport suspension. That car is a hoot.
I got an email last night that the order has been locked for a week, so I'm hoping it's here by late April.

welcome and congrats on the order...
I do also like the nightvision and it sounds like a great configuration,
have you considered the stereo upgrade? that's something I often enjoy too

sad to hear about the Pcar going, while I didn't have a 991, I did trade my 911TT (07)towards my S class....and I miss it ALL THE TIME....
we were expecting our third kiddie, so it seemed like the right thing to do

enjoy the forums!

Thanks. I have had 911s from an '88 turbo cab, '87 Carrera, 2 993s and the TT I just traded in since 1991. In between(ish), I had a '13 Boxster S and now have a '16 Boxster GTS. My firm opinion is the Boxster GTS is one of the overall best of all of those cars. The 991TT/TTS, IMO, are now more GT tourers than "sports cars". For one thing, they are simply too fast and too capable (for me) to enjoy on the street. If that sounds confusing, it's that they are so good at what they do I didn't feel any "rush" at anywhere near safe for the road speeds. My '88 turbo cab was downright scary at times in comparison. And I was quicker and younger then.
The Mezger turbos were pretty special cars; never got to drive one.

I recently cruised by the new Porsche in Durham NC, they have a brand new, circular facility......one cool looking building...looks nothing like the other dealers in their boring box shaped buildings
the new Boxter even looks really nice, an aggressive rear end etc....
feel free to share some pictures as we enjoy that
I miss mine so much, and it was a 6 speed too, I wouldn't want such a car to be an automatic, but that's just me

OK, it's a Mercedes forum, but here's some pics of my Boxster GTS. Dark Blue Metallic/black top/black leather with red belts and sport chrono dial. If you haven't driven one and are considering a 2 seat convertible, it's a wonderful platform. Production of the 3.4 liter 6 cylinder normally aspirated engines just ended (going to a 4 cylinder turbo), which is a big reason I ordered this car.

When you look, I would encourage you to not ignore the 2013-16 Boxster/Cayman platforms. They are certainly NOT "hairdresser" cars and with new MSRPs pushing (and exceeding) $100K, they can be had used for a significant discount (for now, if the new 718 turbo 4s aren't popular, 981 prices may not dive as much as usual).
I love driving that car...

It's on the Eurasian Highway, due into Baltimore April 8. Yay. When it arrives at the dealer, their Escort tech will install a Passport 9500 ci with Mid City Engineering interface to display the detector info on the screen when set to Audio. From there, off to the detailer for a front clip clear bra and ceramic coating after paint correction, which will take 3-4 days.
Then a new DD - my first sedan as a DD. Looking forward to it, using the Boxster on all nice days, of course.
This forum isn't quite as active as Rennlist, but I've picked up some good points here already.

Picked it up today. The dealer's Escort tech installed a Passport 9500ci with an interface that shows the visual on the dash screen when set in "Audio". I drove it around and across town to the detailer for paint correction, clear bra, wheel therapy and ceramic coating. Final pick up Wednesday, then it's my new DD when it isn't nice enough to drive the Boxster.
Their delivery specialist/detail guy said it was the first car he had released "dirty".
Kudos to Bernie Moreno and his team - seamless experience. No nail salon like in Boston, but one of the guys made my wife an Espresso with frothed milk while I finished the paperwork.

Thanks guys. I've been a Porsche/pickup truck guy since '91, but the Panamera just was not competitive with this car. My wife is an A6 diehard (since '92) and refuses to give hers up, but she admitted this car has a comfortable ride.
