Replacing Run flat tires on 20 inch rims
#26
PSS as in Michelin Pilot Super Sports?
I you have to ask about choosing performance tires or all season tires, you probably will like the DWS.
A performance tires is a hundred times better for the cars handling than some mushy, master-of-none all season tire.
Don't get me wrong, i like the DWS but it's no match to a PSS. But every performance tire comes with distinct disadvantages; short lifespan, bumpy ride until therubber warms up and terrible handling when the temps go down to 40's

PSS is great as everybody agrees, but I think this Conti DW is very close to PSS but only half the price compare to PSS now, that's why I am hesitating.

THank you for your reply, I am trying to decide between a Michelin Pilot Super Sports and a conti EXTREMECONTACT DW(Which is a summer tire, not the DWS which is a allseason. Ps I had DWS on a E class before, they are great)

I have no experience with the DW but since performance tires only last 12-15k miles it is probably worth a try and switch to PSS the next year.
Me, I'd pay the extra money for the PSS...

Pulled the Trigger on the tires
So I switched out the Pirelli run flats with the Conti DWS6 tires. Have driven about 200 miles. Below are my comments re comparison
The Conti's are so much quieter. Better ride, Handle corners well. Don't feel as "tight' or stiff as the run flats (naturally) Paid about $220 per tire installed and tax compared to the Run flats that would be about $370. I am going to run without a spare., Continental offers for free a three year repair package including towing up to 150 if you have a flat that cannot be driven on.
Overall, very pleased with the purchase.

I have switched from the Goodyear 20 inch run flat to conti DW summer tire ( not DWS all season) paid &750 for all. Better ride, quieter but not as much as I thought it would be, have not driven on Highway yet though.

I have a suggestion, maybe it's a crazy one but hear me out:
There are these small little spare tires. They have the right size rim but the tire itself is very small. They only good for 50 or 100 miles. You can only drive 50 miles an hour or something like that here's a link to one for the previous model of S class
http://www.ebay.com/itm/2007-2011-ME...5UZV5T&vxp=mtr
I'm willing to bet that if we could find a company to manufacture these units there are probably hundreds of people that would buy one and throw it in the trunk. Yes it takes up room but it would be nice to have in an emergency.
I have the Pirelli 20 inch tires and previously I drove Continentals. I like the Continental tire better but I'm told that the warranty on my rims or the rim insurance isn't valid if I don't run the Mercedes specified tire so even though I prefer the Continental tire I stay with the Pirelli tires.
Still, in that rare case that I'm in Yosemite national Park and my tire is shredded I wouldn't mind having a doughnut spare.
Does anybody have any idea where we could get these donut rims made in quantity?

Thank you Streamliner, are you sure that the spare that came with the W221 will fit the W222? The reason I ask is because I was told they wouldn't fit.
I don't suppose by any luck you know the part number do you?
Thank you
Phil

I do not have a part number for the 221 spare, sorry.
We all NEED to constantly complain to MB that we want at least the OPTION of ordering a spare and having a proper place to store it, when the W223 rolls out.

It was actually my dealer that told me the 221 spare would fit. Believe it or not, as I understand it, MB has a part number for a 222 compact spare, but will not publish it here in the U.S. They actually produce a hold down kit and a fancy cover for the spare, for use when the spare is mounted on top of the trunk floor. There are pictures of it in one of the threads here somewhere.

As long as the bolt patterns and center bores match, I don't see a reason as to why it shouldn't fit.

I have an Edition One S550 coupe and just hit 20K miles and the Pirelli run flats are gone. Almost no tread left. I had a tiny puncture in one and did manage to drive it to the dealership for repair. I wished MB had put a spare but they chose not to do so. Now I am considering buying non run flats as replacements. Continental Tire has a great all season but I think I will at least need a can of Fix-A-Flat and a 12 volt pump. You guys have some great info on this forum....any advice you can give me before I pull the trigger on these Continental tires?

We recently had to use the spare in our other vehicle in a remote a rural area on a Sunday morning. I think that at least having the option to take care of the problem yourself on an urgent basis is very valuable.

The run-flats on our 2015 S550 are showing some wear, and the car now has about 15,000 miles. DH has mentioned replacing with non run-flat tires (and relying on MBRACE roadside assistance). Would you:
1) Replace the tires?
2) Replace with regular vs. run-flat?
3) Wait until we get more mileage on the tires before replacing?
Thanks.

When I ordered my 2015, I got the dealer to agree to swap out the RFT for conventionals. I have 18" wheels and went with Bridgestone Serenity Plus tires. Substantially better ride quality and MUCH quieter at highway speeds. The Michelin MXM4 is also a great choice, but I don't know if either is available in 20" sizes.
On eBay, I purchased an unused, compact spare out of a 2013 W221 and it sits on top of my trunk floor. What luggage space is lost is made up many fold in peace of mind, especially when we drive out of metro areas. Also on eBay, I purchased a new W222 jack & tool kit, which fits under the trunk floor.
To me, RFT with no spare are "kiss of death" obstacles to ride quality and peace of mind. If you hit a road hazard that shreds the tire, with no spare, you are going for a ride in a tow truck. Been there, done that and it ain't no fun. If it happens out in the middle of nowhere, chances are you'll be spending one or more nights in the "No Tell Motel," complete with bed bugs.
Lastly, whatever you decide to do, each and EVERY time you interact with ANYONE from MB, make your feelings on this issue heard loud and clear. It's the only way things will change.
Anyway, let us know what you decide and best of luck!

And so many folks rely on their run flat tires to save them. They are fine for a simple puncture, but road hazards such as potholes can render run flats just as useless as conventional tires that go flat. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR A SPARE! Write to MB and tell them that you at least would like having the option of a spare in your next new car, run flat tires or not. If BMW can offer it in their new 7, MB can find the room in the W222.

Whenever I'm ready for tires, I shop the price a bit at tire shops and then I ask my SA at the dealer. If his price is somewhat close, I give him the deal. It's always good to toss the dealer a bone now and then.

SClassGal-I have Michelin MXM4 19" runflats on my 2015 S.Almost 25K w/5 &6/32 left.Rotated every 5K.As I have said in other posts,I've been very happy with these, particularly for a run flat. The Yokohoma Advan Sport A/S is a good non runflat.Other advice-check any tire with Tire Rack reviews, have new tires road force mounted and balanced to grams with road force numbers below 20.Result-no tire induced vibration.
