Speedlimit Assist

Does anyone know how the speed limit gets adjusted on the heads-up display, instrument cluster and COMAND in the US for the SPEED LIMIT ASSIST feature?

There appears to be conflicting information as to how that gets updated. Some info. I have read states that it actually reads the road sign speed limit signs as a primary source while it uses as a backup the navigation map data. While other info I have read states that in the US it does not read the signs but rather just uses the navi map data.

In PA beginning in May, our interstate highway speeds were raised from 65 mph to 70 mph. I have determined that my car does not read the signs but uses only the data from the mapping software. So in order for the speedlimits in Speedlimit Assist to be updated one must get the map updated in COMAND.

Does anyone else have any experience with this?

Does anyone know if this feature can be retrofitted into a 2015? Again, I have one dealer that tells me it is just a navigation update of which I have yet to do and another dealer telling me no. I drove a 2016 loaner and really like the feature. It seems like it would just be software related. No?

From my understanding it can not be retrofitted onto the 2015 version. It is part of the speedlimit assist package that was not available on the 2015 model. I have it on my 2016 GLE 400, and miss that feature on my 2015 S550. You would think it would be a software fix as my $120 Garmin GPS has the speed limit feature, and even lets you manually update the speeds if they change. I just had the latest v7 update on my 2015 S550 and it does not have the speed limit function.

It is a 2016+ feature but it is a crappy one in the US.

In Europe, the feature is camera-based with database as secondary source. Changes in speed limits due to construction, etc. are picked up immediately and reliably. Same with traffic signs.
Here in the US, it is only database driven which looses a significant real-time aspect.

Our Passport max radar detectors also show the speed limit. Get one of those and you have additional benefits

Interesting. Our '17 SL doesn't and didn't notice that on the '17 e300 loaners. But then i didn't spend too much time with those.

Could you test this in a construction zone? Pickup should be instant.. thanks!

I'll double check, but I'm pretty it changed in a construction zone. My E has the P3 Package.

I checked it today. It does indeed read speed limit signs. Pretty cool.
