Best radar detector and installation on s550?

New 2017 is on order. Just got a 134$ ticket for 41 in a 35. Seriously. Houston is working revenue hard....this was in a rental.

I guess I would prefer an installed detector....anyone have any experience with these and recommendations...or are there some good choices on the other type that are more conspicuous...

Thanks in advance

I have an Escort Passport 9500ci and I would highly recommend it if you are looking for an installed radar detector. I have one installed and several MB owners have the same product. The newer units come with an updated laser shifting system that work even better than on my 5 year old unit. This unit locks out false alarms if a false signal is detected in the same location three times in a row. You can also mark known speed traps and red light cameras because the system is GPS enabled. The unit can be connected to a computer to receive updates on preloaded red light camera and construction area updates. System is expensive but worth every penny on a car of this nature. I would only caution that a reputable installer must be used to ensure a clean install. Some MB dealers install these systems. Hope this helps.

Great. I used car toys to install in the Lexus and they did a great job. My only concern with the new car is all the miscellaneous cameras, radars
and lights. I can see MB blaming any flaws of anything on the 3rd party install

I have not had any issues with any of the auxiliary systems malfunctioning and it has been five years since install. You are right, there is a risk that if something happens, MB could try and blame the system but they will have to prove that the system caused the problem. Mine was installed at the dealer but I have not been near the installing dealer in a long time so I do not know what will happen should a system fail but I do know that the dealers that I have gone to for service have never mentioned the radar detector.

I have a W221 that was new at the time of install with all of the cameras and other items that you are referencing. The W222 should be no different just new tech.

damn? 41 in a 35? sounds nuts! can't believe they'd site you for that!

I have always been pleased with my V1 mounted directly to the left of the rearview....hardwired

My Valentine V1 works perfectly. I have it programmed for "L" and now the distronic does not cause any false triggering. I also have it mounted just to the left of the rear view mirror hard wired.

Escort 9500ci is the best choice imo .Just remember to get a unit from Midwest engineering that will filter out distronic signal, otherwise it won't stop beeping...

Interesting. You guys aren't getting K band falsing with all of the Pre-safe stuff? According to a few sources, all of this operates in the 24GHZ range (short range radar - long range operates at 77GHZ which wouldn't false), which is right there with K band.

I did until I got my Max 360.. Some people however are putting their detectors behind the wrong part of the glass and most of the signal is blocked.. Makes for a very quiet detector ;p

I have the Max 360C in my S. Contemplating getting the Escort ZW5 laser jammers as well. Nice thing about the jammers is that they wirelessly communicate with the Max so you do not have to drill holes in the firewall to install. Downside is they are reported to not be as effective as the ALI units. Either way, the idea of zipping through a speed trap and watching the popo do a double take on their gun would be worth it.

Well, we will have to agree to disagree as I have had great luck with Escort products. The wireless heads on the ZW5 are the same ones they use on the wired version so I am not sure what the compromise is other than the head limitations. Also, it sounds like the new ZW5 shifters do work against the VPR guns. Either way I like the integration of the products and I am not excited about drilling holes in my firewall to run cables.

That's quite alright. Just so you know, the Dragoneye lidar gun has evolved drastically. The Escort products were filmed/tested with ECCM (Electronic counter...measure) mode turned off. The latest firmware, let alone older firmwares with ECCM mode on still nuked ALL Escort products. There are also two flavours of the Dragoneye. the DETC is the one that is almost unbeatable (Dragoneye compact)

How do I know this? I may have a DETC and this may be a hobby of mine. Anyways, google RDF and join that forum if you want to learn more. I may be on that forum as well. But yes, to each their own, I just wanted to let you know in case you find out the hard way, and it's almost a weekly occurance now that someone joins that forum and then complains that their Escort product let them down. Be prepared though, most of us have access to very very expensive equipment to capture and reverse engineer several of those lidar guns. Several of us may be involved in independent testing

Anyways, public service message over. Enjoy

I like my Radenso Pro, best detector I've ever had. Like the GPS location feature and speed readouts and even the compass readout. Great detector.

@superpop: I just got the photos in question. Just asking for permission to share.

That said, yes, I can confirm there is a grommet behind the steering wheel on the cabin side, and if you remove the plastic covering right in front of the windshield in the engine bay, it pops right out there. It is easy to get through the firewall. Once I get permission, I'll share them here and/or on RDF.

So getting installed radar detectors don't void the warranty do they? I think I am going to pull the trigger on the Radenso RC M (just radar for now).

I would also recommend running the Waze app to see where the speedtraps are. It's not 100% but as long as other Waze users report cop sightings, it'll show up. It's saved me a few times.

Almost went nuts buying the Escort Max CI 360 and Mid City dash module. Cost without installation would have been $4000.00. Instead I hardwired my V1 at no cost and it works just fine mounted to the passenger visor.

Do you have a diagram to hardwire?

i am in the process of trying to decide if I want to go this same route. I was quoted a price with labor for around $5000.00 for the Max CI360 and the Mid City addon Maxint222. This would be for a 2019 S560 just not sure if I want to invest that much to speed. I drive like an idiot (according to others) I call it mildly aggressive with a splash of get the hell out of the left lane. Still not sure it is worth $5000.00 though.

lol not sure what to tell you....i am happy using my V1 instead of paying 5k. I have used the V1's mounted to my visors with great success for years and saw no reason to change except it would be pretty cool just not 5k cool. Just my 2 cents. Interested to know what u decide
